D15 near Loon has everything that makes a dolmen complete. Five pairs of supporting stones carry five ‘capstones,’ forming a chamber. This chamber is closed off on both sides by an ‘endstone.’ Halfway along one of the long sides is the entrance, the ‘portal.’ Two pairs of ‘portal side stones’ form a short passage leading to the entrance. The roof of the portal was formed by two portal capstones, one of which is still present.

The portal side stones connect to a ring of upright stones surrounding the dolmen. These once formed the boundary of the ‘tumulus’ that covered the dolmen.

D45 Hunebed, Drenthe, Netherlands

The D45 hunebed is located in the Emmerdennen, a forest area in the city of Emmen in the Dutch province of Drenthe. Hunebedden are chamber tombs, similar to dolmens and date to the middle Neolithic (Funnelbeaker culture, 4th millennium BC). A local legend says that Napoleon's horse left its hoof prints in the hunebed when Napoleon and his horse stood upon it.  This same legend is told about other hunebedden in the area, along with many other folk tales.

Beautiful hike in Drenthe today with autumn in full swing. The piles of stones are in fact graves dating back to the Bronze Age called ‘hunebedden’. These rocks, having come all the way from Scandinavia during the last ice age, were used around 3,500 BC by hunter-gatherers to give their dead a worthy burial. The stones haven’t moved since then and these graves are characteristic for the region, and not found anywhere else in the Netherlands. There are also plenty of burial mounds around (as seen in the last photo), dating from the same era, which you can spot further down south in the country as well.
