@charlunday made my dreams come true taking on this commission for Katniss and Peeta as Orpheus and Eurydice from Hadestown, based on my Hunger Games-Hadestown AU fic, a lover's desire is mutiny.

I love this so much and am going to be staring at it forever. Charlie's dedication to the canon descriptions of these two, the details in the costuming from the show (including the mockingjay feather at the end of Katniss's braid!), the lighting, the dandelion at the center of it all. It makes my heart SO happy!

john is hades, the controlling owner of hadestown (johnstown? johntown?) factory

merle is persephone, and even though he once was in love with john things have gotten...strained, in the past years, as he continues to be forced underground

barry and lup are orpheus and eurydice, and they are in love but that can only get you so far in tough times. lup makes a deal to work down in hadestown, and without realizing it she gets trapped. barry goes to save her, playing a song on the piano that he lugged underground that is beautiful and heartbreaking and missing a vital component

john agrees to let barry try to save lup, remembering what it was like to truly care about someone, but with the eyes of the fates (the hunger) on him, he adds a condition: if barry ever turns around to see if lup is following, she will be trapped forever

part of the hungertown agenda is correlating everlark with orphydice, but if you really think about it, the two pairs are thematic antitheses — katniss and peeta will always survive and end up together because they love each other, while orpheus and eurydice will always be doomed and separated because they love each other.

There's a quality of goodness that's hard to overlook, but still...and then I think of it, what Peeta can do so much better than the rest of us. He can use words. He obliterated the rest of the field at both interviews. And maybe it's because of that underlying goodness that he can move a crowd--no, a country--to his side with the turn of a simple sentence.

I realize only one person will be damaged beyond repair if Peeta dies. Me.

Peeta and I grow back together. There are still moments when he clutches the back of a chair and hangs on until the flashbacks are over. I wake screaming from nightmares of mutts and lost children. But his arms are there to comfort me. And eventually his lips. On the night I feel that thing again, the hunger that overtook me on the beach, I know this would have happened anyway. That what I need to survive is not Gale's fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is a dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that.

I raise my left arm and twist my neck down to rip off the pill on my sleeve. Instead my teeth sink into flesh. I yank my head back in confusion and find myself looking into Peeta's eyes, only now they hold my gaze. Blood runs from the teeth marks on the hand he clamped over my nightlock. "Let go!" I snarl at him, trying to wrest my arm from his grasp. "I can't," he says.
