This is your reminder that the NetherWorld campaign is reaching its end. It’s been successfully funded, including the Switch port and many other stretch goals (marrying, having kids, pets?). Don’t ask me how these fit with one of the most unconventional stories (and main characters), but I’m sure it will be interesting, one way or another. Death’s Gambit is not the only pixel art side-scroller that takes inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus. It also isn’t the only one to overwhelm with the amount of GIFs depicting it. Nope, the game above is NetherWorld, coming from studio Hungry Pixel, the duo of pixel artist Isabel ‘Erien Armentero (@chaisworkingon) and coder Daniel Barreno.

You wouldn’t really confuse the two because NetherWorld is quite more grotesque and stands out with a unique black style of characters that makes even Limbo seem like a peaceful bedtime story. Isabel is definitely bringing something new to the table.

The story itself will be dark, with mature themes from drugs, sex, and rock’n… No, just drugs and sex. I don’t remember when was the last time I’ve seen an orgy in a (pixel art) game.

If this was any more obvious I’d have to tag the post NSFW. Creepy in any case.

I’m really at a loss of words here, NetherWorld is unlike anything I’ve seen before. Luckily the game just came out on Kickstarter—together with a press release—so I can say a bit more. 

The tagline is Drugs, Sex, and Pixels adventure game, but it’s the squid-like black characters that faze me even more than the bouncing breasts. Right off the start of the Kickstarter video, your (squid) wife blows cigarette smoke into your face and abandons you. I’m not sure if it’s the drugs, but somehow you end up in very fucked up surreal situations thereafter. You’ll mostly fight unique bosses (think Shadow of the Colossus) leaving the rest of the game focused on conversations and building relationships with NPCs. I’m not going to pretend I have any idea how this will play out, so I’ll just buy myself a front row seat to see where this goes.

Pixels on the project are being handled by Isabel ‘Erien’ Armentero with Daniel Barrenoís taking care of the rest. Check out the Kickstarter video to become even more confused and snap the early bird price of $6 while it lasts.
