29 August: the unlucky day of Hungary

The borders in 1600 are shown on this map. (Not so) fun fact: Hungary did not lose so many important battles against the Turks by accident. The Ottomans considered August 29 to be a lucky day since the capture of Belgrade in 1521. However, in 1686 while the Holy League was sieging Buda the Turks attempted to break out from the siege on August 29 but they were unsuccessful and had to surrender on September 2, and Ottoman rule ended in Hungary soon after.

Russia's control over the annexed regions of Ukraine as of 14th June 2024

The Russian invasion of Ukraine began on 24. February 2022. In the first weeks Russia made significant territorial gains. However Ukraine had won the most important battle of the war: the Battle of Kyiv. Russian troops retreated from Northern Ukraine by April 2022. Russia captured Mariupol in May 2022 following a destructive siege. On 30 September 2022 the Russian Federation formally annexed Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia oblasts although not entirely controlling any of them. The Ukrainians launched successful counteroffensives in Kharkiv and Kherson oblasts, liberating Kherson city. The Russians managed to take Bakhmut and Avdiivka of Donetsk oblast. As of today the war is in a stage called war of attrition with minimal territorial gains and large losses on both sides, however in the past few months Russian numerical advantage resulted in territorial gains for Russia most notably in the Avdiivka sector west of Donetsk city.

2024 District Mayoral Election Results in Budapest, Hungary.

On the 9th of June the people of Budapest voted on 3 different topics: - Budapest Mayoral Election - Budapest District Mayoral Election - European Parliament Election. This map shows the results of the 2nd.

Compared to the 2019 Budapest District Mayoral Election governing party FIDESZ lost one district, and the opposition coalition managed to maintain a strong majority within the Hungarian capital. Overall Mayoral Election was much tighter. Mayor Gergely Karácsony was re-elected with 47.53% of the votes while David Vitézy recieved 47.49% of the votes. The latter was supported by the Green Party but also Fidesz.

Iran and its proxy network in the Middle East

On 13 April 2024 the Islamic Republic of Iran retaliated Israel for its strike on the Iranian Embassy in Damascus, Syria on April 1 which killed several Iranian commanders. Several missiles and drones were fired towards Israel from Iran and its proxies however almost all of them were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome air defense network. Iran and Israel have never been closer to war than they are right now. This map shows Iran's vast network of proxies across the Middle East which includes Hezbollah, the most powerful non-state actor in the World. The battle hardened Houthis who control most population centres in Yemen as well as Hamas fighters in Gaza. Furthermore the Iranian Government has significant leverage over the governments of Iraq and Syria.

Soviet territorial demands on Turkey, 1945-1953.

During 1945-1953, the Soviet Union made territorial demands on Eastern Turkey, aiming to annex regions like Kars and Ardahan. These demands were rooted in historical claims and strategic objectives, seeking to establish a buffer zone and control key access points to the Middle East. The Soviet Union justified these demands by citing ethnic and cultural ties to the Armenian population in the region. However, Turkey vehemently opposed these demands, viewing them as a threat to its territorial integrity and sovereignty. The dispute over Eastern Turkey further exacerbated tensions between the two countries and contributed to the deepening of the Cold War divide in the region. Ultimately, the territorial dispute remained unresolved, but it significantly shaped the dynamics of Soviet-Turkish relations during this period.
