Loki Odinson, convicted of war crimes against Midgard, was stripped of his magic and his godhood. Much like Thor's banishment after he attempted to wage war on Jotunheim, Loki was also banished to Midgard. With no exceptional abilities and nothing to make him inhuman, he was not much of a threat. Perhaps Odin and Thor were grasping at straws, but they both wanted nothing more than for Loki to prove himself decent. Sentiment drove them to try and provide Loki with a second chance and, to further this, they sealed his memories from him. This spell almost erased Loki's memory from existence, but not quite. He was shadowed from the rest of the world, so those who had once met him might recognize him, but they wouldn't actually remember who he was.
If he could build an honorable life for himself, he would be brought back to Asgard. He would be restored to his "former glory".
That was almost six months ago. Loki's childhood and young adult life were fuzzy, but he never believed he was anything other than human. That, by no means, meant that Loki was actually "normal", he just didn't believe that there was anything other than human blood pumping through his veins.
His life wasn't anything close to ordinary though. Loki was a loner, he traveled around North America searching for creatures that fell into the category of supernatural. Why? To protect humans from them. Vengeful ghosts, demons, demonic possession, vampires, shape-shifters and werewolves were all thought to be myth but Loki knew better. They were as real as he was and they were dangerous. They're favorite victims always seemed to be humans.
If Loki was asked by someone who happened to know what he did, if anyone asked him why, he didn't really have an answer. He always said something like "dunno, I suppose it's just in my blood", but even that sounded strange to him. He really didn't know why he did what he did, it simply felt like something was pushing him to do it. Every time he managed to save a life, every time he managed to extinguish a bit of evil in the world, he felt as if he were making up for something, something that he honestly couldn't remember and didn't even know existed.
Wendigo. Nasty creatures, from the research Loki had done on them, but word reached his ear that campers had been disappearing in the southern part of Washington. Thus far, there had been five victims, a group of four campers and one back packer. They hadn't been heard from for a couple of weeks now and the authorities were unable to find bodies. Traces of where they might have gone or where they might have been taken simply didn't exist. Many people thought Big Foot, or some ridiculous Lady of the Lake story, but Loki had a different hunch and it was his next hunt.
With several weapons and a few days worth of food and supplies, Loki parked his car in the closest town to the forest where all five disappearances happened and he hiked to mouth of the forest. Once there, he didn't even hesitate to enter. If his suspicions were right, during the day, he should have been safe and the sun was still high within the sky. He passed a few hikers, those who didn't have more than a few hours of supplies, meaning they would leave the hiking trails long before the sun went down. Chances were, they wouldn't get deep enough into the forest where the campers had disappeared anyway.
Several hours of hiking into the forest, Loki had fallen off the beaten path. When he came across two men, one about his height and one a bit taller than them both, he was surprised. Why would they have come out so far? For a moment, they locked eyes and Loki considered simply walking away, but if he didn't warn them, they might be the next to disappear. Wouldn't that be the polar opposite of what he was attempting to do by hunting supernatural creatures? Evil?
"You should probably head out before it starts to get dark. Difficult to see the trail without the sunlight," Loki said, stopping only briefly to speak with them.
