Firstly, while his job as a police officer felt like a choke collar keeping him from actually doing good; he had been approached by government type that seemed to appreciate Raf’s ‘particular set of skills’ when they seemed to also have access to his sealed military records, his want to protect people from these strange happenings, and were willing to open up their armory and pockets to him if he needed them to.. They were just his type of people, too shady for his own good and very likely to lead him down a darker path. Secondly, what he was doing at night was a thrill he hadn’t had since his deployment. A dark, twisted thrill that should have been locked away, but a thrill nonetheless. Investigating, following, destroying, all while protecting people he cared for? That and college had been why he had joined the military right out of high school, fuck yeah Raf loved this part far more than he would ever let on to anyone besides Beef. Thirdly, and most important to Raf was the small Romanian college woman who had been crashing at his place since the apartment incident. She’d apparently always had been fascinated by the supernatural to such an extent that she had created a small niche as a youtube paranormal investigator even if she had been fighting off nightmares of the rooftop demon. She’d been unwilling to leave Raf’s small New Jersey house as their lives delved further into the insanity around them. The unwillingness to be separated was shared by Raf as well who had began to rely on the always cheery and quirky personality of his house guest. Unwillingness grew into affection, affection into tension, and tension that snapped into full on feelings that could only be understood as love. She’d become his light in the darkness of his life. One he could not have done without. It was this light which had kept Raf pushing forward through the worn winter path of this strange world that people kept referring to as Arcadia. He honestly hadn’t given a rat’s ass what it was called, they had a mission to complete. Someone to rescue. Someone who had questions to answer. A week before Alex had seemingly sacrificed her life to save Beef during the murder wife bitch mission, but she hadn’t died. She’d been captured by a fairy, and not one of those Tinkerbell motherfuckers either. A true fae that seemed to have some type of connection to people within the group.. How much he hated this fucking place, how much people around him had lied to him. Alex had been the one to kill his wife. Alex, who had placed herself at his side in some twisted, self driven martyrdom. God damn he hated this place, he hated everything to do with fairies, goblins, dragons, werewolves, ghosts, and the supernatural in general. He had hated it from the moment he stood in front of their host and was given a ring as a gift of peace. He hated it in their lavish rooms with a servant on call. He hated it as the sound of a ball began down stairs. He hated it until he saw her step out from behind the dressing screen. The ball gown hugging all the right places and hanging in just the right way. He’d always thought Beef was beautiful. From the times he’d woken up beside her to when they were covered in sweat from chasing or being chased by some monster or another. She stole the air from the room, but now, in that dress, he knew.
