Amourlies form when the body of an organism is prevented from naturally cycling its magic. Through isolation without proper preservation, it can stagnate, rot and fester. The echoes and imprints of its life carry over as its flesh becomes a memory, until it untethers itself and roams as a wisp. Amourlies themselves are poorly understood, as they're rare due to natural processes like decomposition and scavenging. It's debated how aware or sentient they are. It's known, however, that contact with an Amourlie can disorient, confuse, sicken, or harm living beings, especially over long periods. Exposure to high concentrations of magic can "purify" Amourlies, allowing their makeup to dissolve and interact with the magic cycle once more. For this purpose, in addition to many home remedies and professional purifiers, the ASTER Corporation has developed autonomous magic-fueled devices that can detect, capture, purify, and defend against Amourlies (among other things such as wildlife, people, and objects/areas of interest). These ASTERoids have specialized units, the most common of which are as follows: HUNTER Units - Generalist and cursorial, outfitted with a magically enhanced harpoon system within its jaws for spearing and reeling in Amourlies, storing them internally for transport back to an ASTER facility. The external fuel canister sits on the back. SCOUT Units - Multipurpose maintenance, surveillance, and communication droids outfitted with the means to repair damaged or malfunctioning equipment in the field or in city limits. With the ability to fabricate tools within its chassis, elytra concealing biomechanical wings, and a flexible, dextrous clawed tail for attaching onto difficult terrain, SCOUTs make for versatile support. GUARDIAN Units - Large and unwieldy, they exist to take up space. Their antennae can project a field around themselves that prevents and repels animate objects from passing through, allowing them to either contain a threat or keep it out. Larger, stationary versions of this technology exist, but GUARDIANs are able to roll around at a moment's notice with the help of their extendable, shield-shaped limbs.
