Hurricane Lilies!

These spidery fuckers only show up before dangerous storms and then, for a few days, you can find them all over my neighborhood. Suddenly in your gardens, the corners of roads, and church fronts. Warning you that the rain you smell coming is going to be hazardous and to make sure you’re prepared. It feels like something out of a folklore tale just like crows do, and it’s my adminsona’s sacred flower.

We went Sunday driving lazily on a Sunday afternoon and found this lovely, open field right next to a church, hidden in the midst of all this redevelopment. Folks were singing powerfully inside the church. The field was full of flowers called hurricane lilies. I’d never seen that type of flower before and wondered which hurricane had blown them into town way back in the day.
