60/100⠀ ⠀ Hurricane Matthew ripped through Savannah in the middle of the night. The next morning I opened my front door to a green world. I couldn’t see streets or sidewalks, just the bright green of shredded leaves., like someone had put centuries-old live oaks in a giant blender and tried to make a smoothie. The air was thick with chlorophyll and smelled of the mortal terror of trees. Within a few blocks of my house dozens of huge old majestic oaks toppled, pulling up giant swaths of earth. My neighbors and I worked together to clear what we could in the parks and squares around us while the city was busy clearing streets. I found this log covered with ferns and brought it home. A few days later, the ferns died, and before I could toss him in a pile with the rest of the storm debris, it rained again, and the ferns came back. After living among this amazing plant for over a decade, I never knew about its existence, but was always aware of how green the trees look after the rain. Thousands of these resurrection ferns grow on the bark of every live oak. Dry and brown when they don’t have water, they blend in with bark. You can’t see them until the first drop of rain hits and they spring to life, filling the trees with an ethereal lush green glow. Matthew, the resurrection fern, (pronounced Mah-fyew) has been with us for almost two years. I love watching the dying/reviving cycle. Once, the bitch-ass squirrels knocked Matthew off of my deck ledge and sent him to the street 20 feet below. Fuck the squirrels, long live Matthew.⠀ ⠀ **I've been working on this image for a few days, so my head's very much inside the visuals. Yesterday I was walking through the same park I mentioned above. Some city tree maintainers were working on the trees. I saw a whole Matthew family reunion in the back of their truck. How funny, this stick that is so precious to me is refuse to them. ⠀ ⠀ #spaghettimodel #coneofuncertainty #hurricanematthew #hurrricane #fern #thingsthatgrow #plants #resurrectionfern #plantlife #houseplants #the100dayproject #the100dayproject2018 #the100dayprojectOP #objectpermanence #stuff #affinitydesigner #virtualcabinetofcuriosities #art #autobiography #illust (at Chatham Square)
