Firstly, stating that famine has never happened in the US? Simply not true. For example, St Lawrence Island in Alaska suffered an absolutely brutal famine in the late 1870s Yes, this happened a long time ago - but again, constitutional amendments are supposed to last forever.

But on a broader scale - making exemptions for war, famine, disaster relief, financial crises, and any time the government feels it needs to do so means that these budgetary limitations basically never apply. Or when they do apply they won't be needed! So I'd suggest you really need to think of what your goals are and what the criteria should be before settling on a specific proposal like this.

This is the best written analysis of what is really going on in the contraception/birth control debacle that I’ve read so far. The GOP has allowed themselves to be painted into a very unpopular corner on this, and those of us sitting at home seeing this mess unfold have been asking ourselves “What the hell are they thinking? Why don’t they call this what it is, a further intrusion of government power through mandates, instead of making noise, calling women sluts, and playing it as a purely religious issue?”. The first three months of 2012 should be a cautionary tale to the GOP of what NOT to do in the future if they want to have a real political party, capable of being anything but a source of frustration for its own members and political cartoons for its opponents, but I don’t think they’re getting the hint.

I noticed my ironic message wasn't taken as humorously as intended. As someone from a small town, I recognize the difficulty in finding needed wares without driving an hour or more. The flood of serious complainers about Wal Mart and other large stores confirmed my sarcastic post. Side note --- In a few weeks, Husker Red will be all over Laramie. You bet your ass they'll be at Wal Mart too.

Shouldn’t Progressives avoid Wal Mart?

When you live in a small town, Walmart's the only gig in town open on a Sunday or much past 5 p.m. I avoid Walmart when I logistically can or can afford to avoid it. Sometimes, cost forces me to go to Walmart for things like groceries.

I'm also a member of our local food co-op and I do try to avoid Wally World. I shop elsewhere when I can afford it. However, as my brother and I used to cheer:

Walmart, Walmart, that's my store I shop there because I'm poor Yay Walmart!

You are ruining libertarianism for me. Please stop with this utopian ideal and return to the world we inhabit. Taxes are a part of our social contract, so work with the paradigm of reforming them rather than pretending they are violations of rights.

I didn’t “enter a contract” just for being born. Much less one that demands my subservience and property for unrequested services rendered inefficiently.

And if your alleged flirtations with libertarianism are so fragile as to be ruined by simple logic and reason, I'm afraid your cause may already be lost (especially in context of some of your other posts and reblogs). I've offered steps to "work within the system" before, but it's perhaps more important to understand the philosophy of liberty to better grasp its practical purpose and visualize its ideological goal. Libertarianism, through the principles of self-ownership and non-aggression, is both consequential in its understanding what is efficient and best for most individuals and deontological in advocating what is morally right. A Libertarian is no utopian.

But if cheese, tomatoes, and dough ruin pizza for you, it's doubtful pizza ever stood a chance.
