back on my bullshit aka overthinking about promare and the burnish. because the story never really delves too deeply into any of their pasts or what quality it is in a human that makes them compatible with the promare. anger obviously plays a part, but it seems like a specific kind of anger. the kind that builds up from being repressed, feeling disenfranchised, facing daily abuse--emotional, physical, or otherwise--and tolerating it because you think there is no other option.

there also seem to be varying levels of compatibility. we see when lio releases his promare into their dimension, it is a group of voices, rather than just one. but we have no way of knowing if that is everyone’s experience or just lio’s. it’s likely that some burnish are only synched with one promare, and perhaps the variability is due to the extent of the person’s feelings of disempowerment, or their frustration over it. it would explain why some burnish have stronger flames than others.

I haven’t read any interviews, so I don’t know if any of this has already been addressed, but it paints a pretty sad picture. especially in light of the oppression these people continue to face as burnish.
