Die Verfassung der DDR von 1949 markiert die Teilung Deutschlands. Doch erst 1968 wurde sie ausdrücklich sozialistisch.

In einer legendären Sitzung stimmte die Volkskammer am frühen Morgen des 24. August 1990 für den Beitritt der DDR zum Geltungsbereich des Grundgesetzes gemäß Artikel 23 mit Wirkung zum 3. Oktober 1990. PDS-Chef, Gregor Gysi kommentierte das Ergebnis damals mit den Worten: "Das Parlament hat soeben nicht mehr und nicht weniger als den Untergang der DDR beschlossen."
