Summary:
After an(other) argument, Gilbert drives aimlessly at night. His car stops where it shouldn't...
[Small enough to put it here (Hits/Kudos appreciated though):]
Door slammed open and car keys on his left hand, Gilbert leaves the house so fast his brain doesn't quite register what happens in between grabbing the keys and driving his car into the night. Another argument, another night driving, which is not the routine he imagined when he moved to Ludwig's West Berlin house. He lets out a heavy sigh, thinking is too soon to decide which of the two was in the wrong—of course he thinks it is Ludwig, however chances are that in the following hours he changes opinion: perhaps he, or both, were being dickheads. It's fine, things will be fine, and then they can argue and do this all over again (it isn't like he has much else to do, or where to go after his apartment...)
He is mad again, so better the gates at the railway level crossing he is stay open or he will—
His Trabi's engine stops in the middle of the tracks before he can complete his destructive thoughts.
"SHIT."
A shudder goes down his spine. Holding his breath, and as yellow lights turn red and the beams behind and in front of him close, he turns the key: ignitions fails.
"You gotta be kidding me! COME ON!"
He keeps trying, ignoring thoughts about July of 1967, but the engine keeps wheezing like an asthmatic instead of properly starting. There is no time to diagnose the car he had to wait for so long to obtain, and that he took with him from the East to the West, and that he is not going to lose here. Next to him a bird begins chirping anxiously, his pet for the first time showing signs of being with him since being in the car. It pecks the hand he has on the wheel, so Gilbert swats it up without actual intentions to hurt the bird.
"Go away, I got this," he grumbles, opening a window with the crank handle.
The bird leaves at the same time he sees lights moving closer. "Come on, come on, come on," he repeats as he keeps turning the key, his heart thumping hard in his chest.
But the Trabant stays fast asleep, unaware of the urgency. Only when the train headlights are blinding him and the roar is deafening him he stops trying, realizing his stubbornness won't save him—nor his car—against moving mass. "FUUUCK!" he screams, gripping the wheel; he lowers his head and squeezes shut his eyes, waiting for th
Gil not going home for days but Lud knows he is clubbing in Berlin or another city, vs Gil not going home for days and Lud nor anyone else knows where the fuck he is (and doesn't seem to be sightseeing somewhere in the world either).
Basic concept for 90s fic I'm too slow to write properly:
Gil: I don't want you to see me weak...
Rode: Fool, I already have seen you "weak".
Gil: ...I bet this makes you happy—wait, what did you say?
Rode, after sighing, and also doing his hardest to not call Gil an idiot: A. I think you're projecting; B. Have you forgotten about everything? Moments from the last two centuries...
two dream/nightmares (psychological) ideas i'm not writing properly any time soon:
1- ludwig sitting as a grinning gil rants standing in front of lud: "after all this time, after everything, somehow, you have not experienced real loss yet. but you will!" next time lud sees gil, the older brother will guess correctly that something is bothering his brother, but he refuses to explain. (i already made a fic where gil finds something similar to this funny af so this one shouldn't be like that lol).
2- kid!gil in his knight uniform talking with xxi century gil. the kid asks in a mocking voice: "you?—us?—having a normal life? you are making me laugh!" after a bit adult gil simply replies: "why not?" next reply is either a) "...you try that, i can't. i'm going back inside..."; b) "do it for both of us"; c) no reply at all, just the sardonic smile becoming natural instead. next morning lud finds gil in the kitchen, lets say that awake before him for this first time in a while—doesn't remember the dream though.
One of Gil's (NP) friends in the 2nd half or after the 90s, kind of unprompted: "Now that you're back being your old self, everything is fine now, right?"
Gil, a little confused: "Yeah?"
"There is nothing to worry about."
"No... Well, haha, not yet, if you omit—"
"Nothing at all!"
"...It sounds like you're comforting yourself instead of me. Want to talk about—?"
