Summary:
Greed Island. “The World’s Playground.” That hotbed of excess, beauty, and debauchery, the island where the rules are merely suggestions. Hedonism runs the day as tourists flock to its casinos, clubs, amusement parks, and pristine beaches and forests. And keeping the revelers safe are the brave members of the GISD - the Greed Island Safety Department.
Following the devastating loss of his previous firehouse, loose-cannon Kurapika isn’t sure he ever wants to go into the field again. But when his long-suffering brother, Pairo, decides they need a change, they trade in their winter coats and gloves for shorts and swimsuits and join the esteemed crew of House 36 (or, in Pairo’s case, serve as their eyes in the sky as a dispatcher). There, they meet a cast of characters as colorful as their new home’s flora and fauna.
Kurapika is only looking for a job. He doesn’t need - or want - a new family. He’s sure his new House and a brash, brilliant, beautiful paramedic just might turn his entire demolished world upside down.
Or it could put him back together again.

This one kicked me right in the feels with all the canon compliant abuse Killua was going through. There’s also some suspense and mystery thrown in for good measure!

I loved the worldbuilding in this one! Gon is struck by homesickness when for yet another year he can’t celebrate the summer solstice holiday Aunt Mito raised him with. He figures out a way to celebrate anyway, even if it isn’t quite the same as he remembers. Get ready for the warm and fuzzies.

Prince Gon and Prince Killua try to escape from their arranged marriages, only to end up running into each other as runaways. Shenanigans ensue. Gon is exactly as terrible at lying as you might expect. This story is funny and silly and entertaining! I enjoyed the writing style.

I thought this was part of HxHBB21 but it isn’t tagged as such? Maybe it was just one of the fics dropped into the fic rec thread in the HxHBB21 Discord so it got filed into the HxHBB category in my brain. Anyway this is a modern fantasy AU where magical creatures / fae live hidden in plain sight among humans and they very much want to stay that way. The worldbuilding is intriguing and it makes you think!
6. Bonus 2: Where are you roaming? By clood
Here’s another one that I read from the HxHBB21 fic recs thread even though it isn’t actually part of HxHBB21 (obviously because I already put a different fic by clood in this very thread). Anyway this one is a bittersweet ghost hunter AU. I enjoyed the worldbuilding and the writing style AND THE SAD.

Summary: The Whale Island Observatory offers one of the most coveted internships in the country, and it just so happened to land on Killua Zoldyck, a recently graduated astronomy student who has worked his ass off for this internship ever since he entered university, vowing that he’ll go back to the island where his passion for astronomy started.
It’s a shame that in between trying to keep himself afloat and raising enough money to free his sisters from their family, he lost sight of the love he once had for the stars.
Too good of an opportunity to pass up, and the fact that the money would afford him a new life with his sisters, Killua decided to accept the internship anyway—though he swore to quit as soon as the internship is over. Why would he force himself to go through something he’s forgotten how to enjoy? It’s not like he has something worth staying for.
Then enter Gon Freecss, the long-lost childhood friend Killua met years ago, who seemed to be more excited about the internship than he is.… Well, damn. Maybe this internship wouldn’t be so bad, after all.

So I've been dying to post this, my first hxhbb fanfic is now up in AO3!!!
This is the first time I did a long fanfic and I didn't even know what I was doing half of the time. Many thanks to everyone who helped me, especially to @hxhhasmysoul for beta reading and being very patient with me, also to my colab artist @dimensionten for giving out suggestions and choosing my work. Thanking @hxhbb2021 as well for all the efforts in making this hxh event possible. I really had a great time 💛

It’s been a while since I’ve written something but this fic has been in the making for months and I’m super excited to finally start posting chapters.
It’s leopika (ofc) centered around the contrast of normal life in NYC and the - mostly fictional - underground business involving the mafia.
