Hyakki Yagyō, the legendary “Night Parade of One Hundred Demons,” is one of Japan’s most haunting and beautiful folklore images: a midnight procession of oni, yokai, spirits, abandoned objects, and strange presences moving through the old streets like fear given a body.
But this story is more than a monster parade.
It speaks of ancient Kyoto nights without streetlights, of unlucky days and protective charms, of bridges where worlds seem to touch, and of the human need to give shape to invisible anxieties. In the shadows of Hyakki Yagyō, disease, memory, resentment, neglected tools, and private fear all begin to move together.
Maybe that is why the image still feels modern.
