"In the beginning was hydrogen" - about hydrogen technology
"The fact that everything that has ever arisen and will arise in the future was contained in hydrogen as a possibility from the beginning is the most significant discovery of modern natural science insofar as it forces each of us who does not want to forcibly close ourselves off to this insight to recognize the fact that this world with its history has a cause that cannot lie in itself. Beyond this one, single fact, everyone is free to decide what he wants to think of a cause that has given the atom, this simplest of all elements, which has arisen for us out of nothing, possibilities of development that include his own existence and his thinking about these things as well as the whole universe. (Hoimar von Ditfurth: "In the beginning was hydrogen", 1972, p. 271, emphasis added)
The quote and the modified title of this essay come from the very readable, popular science book by Hoimar von #Ditfurth "In the beginning was hydrogen" from 1972, which I devoured with great enthusiasm as a teenager. The "forefather of German science journalism" was wisely right once again: "The fact that everything that has ever been created and will be created in the future was contained in hydrogen as a possibility from the beginning is the most significant discovery of modern science[...]". At first, this only sounds like a "scientific creed".
But in the following, this dictum from 1972 will be filled with life, as the topic could not be more topical. In this essay, it is a personal concern of mine to present the many possible applications of hydrogen technologies for a sustainable energy supply and climate stability for the future of mankind. In this respect, this essay follows on seamlessly from my previous text "Of the Don Quixote lottery - or the fight against/with windmill wheels" (https://philosophies.de/index.php/2023/10/30/von-der-donquichotterie/), as it is not only about constantly naming problems, but also offering concrete #solutions to them.
