Hydropower generation Remains Below Programme Despite Monsoon Progress
India's Hydropower generation remained below programme during the first quarter of the financial year as reservoir levels across several major projects continued lagging last year's position. Central Electricity Authority data showed cumulative hydro generation reaching 41,239 MU against a target of 46,499 MU, resulting in an 11.3 per cent shortfall. Reservoir levels India remain a key factor affecting electricity production across multiple regions.
The eastern region recorded the largest deficit at 31.2 per cent below programme, while northern, north-eastern and southern regions also generated below planned levels. The western region remained the only area exceeding programme because of stronger reservoir conditions. Reservoir data showed lower storage at Srisailam, Mettur, Tehri, Bhakra and Rengali, although western reservoirs including Sardar Sarovar benefited from improved monsoon conditions.
Srisailam reservoir contained only 155 MU of energy against a full capacity of 1,392 MU, while five of six generating units at the left-bank powerhouse remained under annual maintenance until 12 July. Recent rainfall is expected to improve storage conditions, but the electricity generation already lost cannot be recovered.
