Call Down the Hawk From the Air
Paddy Mayne/Bill Stirling
Est. word count: 15K
Paddy won’t let his ex-captain’s prick brother put him on a short leash while his team crumbles around the scandal of David’s arrest. He wins games, not hearts, and Bill Stirling has a problem with both.
Oh, Paddy can feel Stirling’s desire to strike him. He can taste the tension, it fills his nose and lungs. He inhales and savours the sensation. Come on, do it.
“Is it the time to pick fights in bars, Mayne?” Stirling hisses instead. “You lead this team now. Star attacker and captain are not the same job.”
“You think I’m the star attacker?” Paddy laughs. “How very kind of you. I’m flattered, truly, but unfortunately unmoved. I take no lessons from little penpushers who have thrown no ball, have protected no net, have scored no goal. Get on the field, run that entire length of grass without throwing up your lungs. Then, I’ll be able to hear what the fuck you say.”
“My experience on the field has no impact on my legitimacy as your coach." Stirling steps closer, closing the distance, and the fucker is too tall to Paddy's taste. He lifts his chin. "I was nominated, and that is all you need to hear. You’ll have to toe the line, Mayne, if you wish to stay captain.”
