Portraits with @roshny.n (1/3). Let's spend the next couple of days talking about one of my favorite portrait series. Its going to be a challenge to talk about this in just 3 parts so I will try my best to keep each post as concise as possible. --------------------------------------------- The best type of work is done when there is mutual trust between the model/ muse and the photographer because that is when both parties are having fun and when creative liberties can be taken. So going into this shoot, I kept in mind that I wanted the eyes to speak the most. Yes, the rest of the body is important too, but the spark in the eyes was where I wanted my audience to start with and then travel down to see the rest of the image. Without a fun and lively atmosphere, I would not be able to capture the right expressions from the eyes of Rosheny. --------------------------------------------- Of course, its not all my doing. Rosheny herself was able to let herself be free of any inhibitions and just simply let me work in my way. Intentions (i) 5/5. Its fairly obvious to a trained eye that I use fashion lights for my fine art work. I just fucking love ironies! When we look back at the body of work of some of the greatest photographers in the world like Annie Leibovitz, Peter Lindbergh, Steve McCurry, Irving Penn, just to name a few, we see developmental greatness. We learn that other than honesty, there is no formula better than honesty to connect with our audience. Lindbergh once mentioned about how he fucked up his first several years as a lead photographer with payment issues, contractual disputes with his team and so much more. I too have had payment issues with the team or talents I hire. I do not lie about it. I do not really make an effort to cover my tracks at all. It is not because I do not care about my image, its really because the more I hide through speech, the more obvious my dishonesty becomes through my actions, and worst still, through my art. EVERYTHING STARTS FROM HOME. Intentions (i) would not have worked if I had an agenda. My career would not have taken off if I had an agenda. My art would not be relatable if I had an agenda. Intentions 3/5. Here's how my mind processes multiple exposure work: when you take a pen and continuously draw circles on a piece of paper, you get a collection of visual distortions that somehow becomes shapes. When your eyes follow the lines, it all looks like meaningless scribbles but when you look at what was drawn in its whole, you get art. A lot of multiple exposure work is done with careful consideration of symmetry and cleaned up for a more aesthetic storytelling experience for the audience. I chose to work with multiple exposures in a different manner. Specific to my work, "clean" means a lack of risk; and that means a lack of storytelling - for me. Thus, the rule of compensation; you purposely distort or ignore something and compensate it with something else. INTENTIONS (I) 1/5. Intentions is a project that dwells into self-expression and the art of telling a story without the two most common means of communication, the face and the voice. I collaborated with a young stage actress from Italy for this project. Her trust in me was incredible. This was the first Ylenia was going to work with me and on sublime sexual content. Trust is the biggest thing that I work with. When the trust in me fails, the project fails. Over the past couple of weeks I have been challenged to fall back on what inspires me. Let's do something different here - I'm going to break the fourth wall and communicate directly to you as Jasbir the person and not the artist of @bedtimetalesinc03 or the salesman of @hyperfrontal_productions_sg . Over the past several years of building whatever you may call my career to be, I have been beaten down, betrayed, taken advantage of, criticised and so much more - but I never gave up. Over the past one year, I have lost more friends and social opportunities all in the pursuit of my art. I have worked with businesses, organisations and people who still use my work but refuse to remember my name. So what is the point then? Why stay on? Why work on something that is going to leave me high and dry? The answer to that question is Love. Love is a force almost as powerful as any other force of nature. It creates, it destroys but most importantly, it inspires. There is nothing more difficult in this world than the act of loving but if that love is genuine, there is nothing anyone can do to stop you from trying to break through what others may call an "impossible situation".
