Golden Games: Amberwick
Chapter 5: Father’s Day
The sun was soft that morning. It bled through gauzy curtains in golden strands that felt too symbolic, too exact. I sat at the kitchen table, nursing coffee gone cold. Martin had always loved mornings like this, slow, quiet, when the world hadn’t yet remembered its noise.
He walked in like always, hair slightly damp from a shower, old leather gloves tucked under one arm. The ones I’d asked him to throw out months ago, worn thin, cracked across the knuckles. But he never let them go.
Today, I had a replacement. Sleek, black leather, boxed and tied. I placed them on the table between us.
"Happy Father’s Day," I said.
He looked at the box. Didn’t open it. Just smiled.
"Thank you, son. They’re beautiful."
Then, as if on cue, he asked: "Want to go for a ride?"
We hadn’t gone biking together since I was a kid. I didn’t know why I said yes.
The bike path ran along the edge of Amberwick, winding between sunlit trees and sleepy, golden-tinged houses. Martin led the way, always glancing back, always making sure I was still behind him. It was almost perfect, almost like nothing had changed.
Until we reached the clearing.
He stopped. I pulled up beside him, breath shallow.
"Let me adjust the seat for you," he said.
I dismounted. He took my hand. The leather gloves were still in my palm, he hadn’t taken them.
"Actually," he said gently, "you wear them."
His hands guided mine, sliding the gloves over my fingers. They fit perfectly. The leather was tight, smooth. Familiar.
Then he stepped behind me.
"Just one more thing."
Something cold slipped over my face, a mask, smooth and firm, sealing instantly. I couldn’t cry out. My hands went up, but too slow, too late. The scent inside was warm. Gold.
I turned, heart pounding.
Martin stood firm, both hands on the mask, locking it in place. His eyes glimmered, not with malice. With peace.
He whispered, "You’re safe now."
The world dimmed. My thoughts blurred. The name Percival floated away.
I remembered everything. The gold. The spiral. The scent of oud on Walid’s skin. The perfect cling of the jersey. The rubber polos.
Then I remembered nothing.
No name. Only number. Only mission. Only gold.
