Polka dot plant giving some Autumn flowers (Hypoestes phyllostachya), native to South Africa, Madagascar, and south east Asia. The spots often merge into larger areas of colour. Adds interest in pots or garden. Cut the flowers back as they make the plant go leggy. Thrives with a good prune. Red and Green Polka Dot Plant. (Hypoestes phyllostachya), native to South Africa, Madagascar, and south east Asia. I don’t usually let the plants flower as they then go leggy but these purple flowers are nice in Autumn. The spots often merge into larger areas of colour. I have lots of self seeded plants pop up in pots or in the garden. After flowering I cut the plant back hard because they do well with a good prune.
