Ruscus hypoglossum is native to Europe. Common names include spineless butcher's-broom, mouse thorn and horse tongue lily. I never would have guessed, if Janice at the greenhouse had not told me, but apparently they grow this plant for the plant morphology class because what appear to be leaves are actually derived from stem tissue.
