Former Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band Vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay Dies at 78
- “The music never stops, but today it has a little less soul,” Hyryder says
Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, former Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band vocalist, died Nov. 2 at 78 “after a lengthy struggle with cancer,” her family said in a statement.
“She was a sweet and warmly beautiful spirit, and all those who knew her are united in loss,” Godchaux-MacKay’s family said.
“Our collective hearts are broken,” Dark Star Orchestra said upon hearing the news.
As Donna Jean Thatcher, she sung backgrounds on Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman” and Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds.” After relocating to California and marrying pianist Keith Godchaux, who joined the Dead in 1971, Donna Jean Godchaux entered the fold in ’72.
“The beauty and power she brought to the stage and studio will forever be cherished by Dead Heads,” Hyryder said. “The music never stops, but today it has a little less soul.”
Godchaux appeared on five Grateful Dead studio albums, from 1973’s Wake of the Flood to ’78’s Shakedown Street; Bob Weir’s Ace; the Garcia Band’s Cats Under the Stars; and other projects. Though she mostly sung backgrounds and duets with Weir and Garcia, Godchaux also wrote and handled leads on “From the Heart of Me” and “Sunrise” for the Dead and JGB’s “Rain.”
“Thank you for the sweet sounds with the Grateful Dead back in the day,” Tinsley Ellis said.
Keith Godchaux died in a car accident shortly after the couple left the band in 1979. Donna Jean Godchaux would go on to form Donna Jean Godchaux Band with her bassist husband David MacKay. That’s where she crossed paths with Susana Millman, who joined the Dead organization during the Brent Mydland years.
“But (I) was so fortunate to get know her as a friend and a dedicated musician in the past few decades,” Millman said of Godchaux-MacKay.
“A beautiful human inside and out, her absence impoverishes our world.”
