I'd managed to work up the nerve to go back to the old house. Despite the fact heretics had been living there almost as soon as I'd left, my journal was still beneath the floorboards along with the booze I'd hidden.

I can't believe that I'd forgotten just how bad my life had been. I mean, I remember just how awful my father was, of course, but the little details of what it feels like to be on the edge of death from the moment you open your eyes is quite something. I wish I could have left sooner.
