When "Malfoy" becomes "Draco"
I was just reading a fanfic where, predictably, Draco and Harry mark the beginning of their relationship by calling each other by their first names. And as always happens when I read that trope, I felt so giddy, so happy.
And it occurred to me: that's such a simple act to be emotional about. Of course, seemingly insignificant things can be profound given the right context, but still. Why was this moment a big enough deal that I have stopped reading the fic just to write this Tumblr post?
Well, in this particular fic, which is smutty btw so fair warning if you want to read, Draco gets Harry to call him by his first name, saying basically "if we're going to be together then call me Draco," and Harry does.
I think there's something especially emotional about Harry calling him Draco for the first time because that's such a noticeable, tangible change in their relationship and a milestone for Draco, who has always wanted Harry's friendship. When they introduce themselves for the first time, Draco calls himself, "Malfoy, Draco Malfoy." He leads with his last name: his social currency and status in the WW, and then says his first name, which is what his friends call him.
And while they're in school, it's "Malfoy" and "Potter." And very often in fanon, when they're still enemies or acquaintances they use last names.
But when they're ready to be honest with themselves and each other, they use first names. Potter becomes Harry. Malfoy becomes Draco.
And it's then that Draco earns Harry calling him by his first name. He's earned his redemption, he's earned Harry's affection, and he's no longer just Malfoy.
I know it's cheesy but I just love that little trope. It's a wonderful way to mark their transition from enemies to lovers (or friends, depending on the fic of course). And I think it's a little achievement for Draco, who's been 'Malfoy' all his life. And especially after the war, as he tries to form an identity outside of his father's influence, being recognized as Draco and not just Malfoy is important.
And for Harry, too, his first name is important to his identity. He's more than Potter, or 'Harry Potter'—he's just Harry. He's more than the savior. Contrary to what Draco used to think, Harry doesn't crave the spotlight or the fan worship. He just wants to be Harry. And when Draco calls him by his first name, it's a sign that Draco is seeing past 'Potter' to get to know Harry.
Accomplishment: I have brushed my teeth and washed my face (with product) at least once every day for 2 weeks, and only 2 of the days did I actually only do it once vs twice!
minuet and trio form is punching me in the face while asking me to name 2 features of it
