A Long Time Ago - Cherik fic

I ship Cherik (Charles/Erik) from X-men, so here's a drabble. Warning: death.

Ever since that day. The day on that Cuban beach where lives were shattered like the missiles the Russians and Americans sent. Ever since Erik's greatest fear was losing that last thread. He tried his best to ignore that fear, to shield himself from it.

And now here it was, playing out before him even worse than his many nightmares had visioned. A small part of him wondered if it was meant to end like this since the day in Cuba. If there was something he could have done differently, if he'd gone too far.

So in the face of his worst fear, he uttered something he never thought he'd have the courage to.

"I'm sorry Charles. I'm so sorry. Forgive me."

He clutched to the bleeding man in his lap, his helmet cast aside, his cape torn and silver hair blowing in the breeze. The telepath looked up at him with old and expressive blue eyes, eyes he's had both dreams and nightmares about. The emotion he saw there was not anger or resentment. it was something he had long since stopped hoping for.

"Oh Erik..."

A wrinkled but no less gentle hand raised from the bloody wound to graze his cheek, leaving a smear behind on his face. Tears welled at those blue eyes as a small smile graced the man's lips.

"Erik, my dear friend. I forgave you... A long, long time ago."

It wasn't until he saw the droplet land on Charles's cheek that he realized he was crying himself. The tears didn't stop even after Charles had closed his eyes for the final time.

I have a card under my desk.

It fell there today when I was cleaning. It's a silly card. It's aged, you can tell. It has a cartoon dog standing on the front of it holding out a flower. In the background is a giant red heart. It's a Valentine's Day card. On the inside, above and below the standard cute punchline in any Hallmark card, there is some writing:

Name, Since I met you, I have been happier than I've ever been in my entire life. Name. There's a photo in there, put in there by a little girl who couldn't look at the card or the photo anymore.

I have a card under my desk. It fell there today when I was cleaning.

I didn't pick it up.
