He would never make sarcastic jokes about you in front of his friends, but you started it first, didn’t you?
At first, the harmless dares were simple. Telling the first joke you found online, or singing one of his songs in a ridiculous voice.
Or truths that were barely embarrassing at all. Questions like “How long has it been since you updated your wardrobe?”, “What’s the most useless gift you’ve ever gotten?”, “What do you like most about me?”
But all of that came with your less pleasant options too.
“Take a photo for the fans in the bathroom.” “Eat a whole lemon.” “Speak only Arabic until your next turn.” – leaving him no choice but to stay silent.
Even then, he still made sure things wouldn’t become too difficult for you. “Tell an embarrassing story.” – but when you got shy, he let you write it down in the notes app and read it himself instead. “Speak into a toothbrush like it’s a microphone all evening.” – and even though there was supposed to be a punishment for failing, he deliberately ignored every time you forgot. “Put on that shirt that’s gotten a little too small.” – but he draped his jacket over your shoulders so you wouldn’t feel uncomfortable.
Today, though, you clearly wanted to have fun. Or maybe provoking Seungmin had been your plan from the start. His final straw was the dare where he had to get on all fours and bark for ten seconds. Whether you meant to or not, revenge wouldn’t take long.
Sitting back down after some of the least pleasant seconds of his life, a realization crossed your mind – you’d underestimated Seungmin. He had always been sure that you saw him as too soft, too incapable of fighting back properly, too reserved to ever show his true nature completely.
Seungmin didn’t want you to think he was weak. But he did want you to see him as understanding, polite to the core, raised with strict manners and ethics – because that was true. How could a man barking on the floor possibly seem refined enough? Today had simply been an exception, and you were the one who allowed it to happen.
If you had noticed the way Seungmin’s gaze changed for just a second, you might’ve realized you’d made a mistake somewhere along the way. Maybe you got carried away, even if you still refused to admit it. After that, he stopped giving you dares altogether. No tasks, no payback, nothing at all. Soon enough, you stopped expecting it.
The only thing driving you insane was the feeling of someone else’s hand resting on the top of your thigh through your tight pants. But he was just touchy, right? Nothing surprising about that.
Every time you chose “truth,” his hand slowly drifted lower toward your knee, stroking with lazy pressure. Just like always. You were already used to affection from your boyfriend. You tried to ignore the tension between the two of you, as if the air itself had thickened and become harder to breathe.
Maybe your breathing slipped just a little when his fingers brushed lower, closer to the inside of your thigh, hiding cruel intentions beneath familiar tenderness. Nothing in his expression betrayed him either – he smiled only at his friends, never once looking at his victim.
Surely it was accidental. How else could it be?
Gentle strokes slowly turned into firmer squeezes just above your knee, lingering far too long before his fingers switched to absentminded little patterns drawn against your thigh.
Nothing would’ve exposed his game if you hadn’t suddenly flinched at one of your friend’s comments – too sharply for the guests, but probably predictably for your boyfriend. The girl sitting across from you looked genuinely worried, asking if the words had upset you.
In reality, you hadn’t even heard what was said. Your entire body was focused only on the way his fingers had drifted dangerously close for just a moment. Too close.
You quickly brushed it off, saying you’d just zoned out, stretching your arms before taking another sip of champagne. Even though you tried to look relaxed, your movements came out awkward and twitchy.
You shifted closer to the table with its long tablecloth, hoping you could somehow blend into it, become the same color, or at least hide the heat burning in your cheeks. More than anything, you tried to put a little more distance between yourself and Seungmin.
And once he finally left you alone, a strange feeling settled over you. You couldn’t accept the emptiness beside you, as though the main source of warmth had suddenly disappeared. Obviously not. The farther away, the better. You’d had enough of this game.
Except the game was still going. Just no longer by your rules.
Seungmin kept finding reasons to lean across the table, whispering something to his friend every single time, only for the friend to complain about Seungmin tickling him again. Out of everyone there, only you knew what the performance was really for. To reach his friend, Seungmin had to lean behind your back, deliberately brushing against you.
You were sure it was deliberate.Pink cheeks. Trembling fingertips. Legs pressing together beneath the table. And in return, a faint crooked smile that was definitely meant for you, even though his eyes looked somewhere else entirely.
You laughed a little too loudly, drawing far more attention than expected, then stood up from the table and claimed you felt slightly sick. It wasn’t entirely a lie – the walk to the bathroom felt unnaturally long, strangely uneven
..What was wrong with him? Too strange. Too bold. Too...
The last thing you remembered before being swallowed by complete darkness was the feeling of hands gently pushing you into the bathroom, and the door closing behind you.
