matt: “before this moment in my life i had an angry young man syndrome. i felt resentful and that i hadn’t done anything and it really weighed on me even though i didn’t realize it at the time. and it was like one or two people from toronto that went ‘oh you made that web-series i really liked that,’ that i completely relaxed and kind of became my adult self”
“it works on jay and i too. you won’t meet two bigger fans of the show than jay and i. and we talk about it as though we are just the same as you! we quote it, we’re like ‘isn’t it funny when jay says this’ and we laugh til we cry over the little things that these characters do and say to one another and the little adventures they get into…”
jay: “i know it’s hard to believe but we really didn’t even intend to share it. we made it, maybe to show our immediate friend group… showing anything that we, each, contributed to this. we *gestures between matt and himself” were each other’s audience. so if matt made an edit of the very first couple scenes together, he was showing an audience of one *points to himself*, and we were gauging just off of how much we were laughing.
“it’s the age old story where you don’t think about the audience you think about just making it for your friends and then you’re so delighted when people are seeing that same thing you’re seeing. that’s why so many people come up to us and are like “it feels like you made this show for me, i’m such a target for this.” and we’re… like akin to that. like you find your people that way, when it’s so unapologetically honest to yourself… it’s unlike any other project i’ve been involved in in that sense, it’s just so insular and personal.”
