dally winston , you don’t have to pretend to be fine. if you need me to stay, i will.
she’s been pretending all this time, why would she stop now? even as dally speaks, the smile on carter’s features remains, only faltering when she realizes he can see straight through the perfect girl facade. no one’s ever called her out like this before, either because they believed her laughter and lies, or because they didn’t want to see what was underneath. she didn’t blame them ; it as dark. even she couldn’t handle it, most of the time, which is why the cycle of her fake happiness continued. when her eyes meet dally’s, the grin finally fades, bottom lip trembling involuntarily, instead. ‘ i didn’t realize it’d be that easy to get you to stay over, d, ’ it’s a half ditch effort to tease the boy as she begins to hug herself on her bed. she does want him to stay. she wanted that more than anything. being alone, being lonely - just because carter was used to those things, didn’t make them hurt any less. she wets her lips, swallows the lump in her throat, and gathers the courage to look at him again. ‘ i guess i’d feel better if you stayed . . . thank you, ’ @nimbles.
if we assume that martino’s father left because his mum is mentally ill, can i point out that, in that case, martino will make the purposeful choice to stick by niccolò’s side and be a better man than his father was?
❝ –––––––––––––––– I’m not coming in. . . We can train out here if we must, but I’m not coming in. ❞ Thunder rolls, sending goosebumps rippling across her flesh, half-tempted to flinch in fear of the unknown. It’s the RAIN that keeps her grounded, face tilted skyward as she basks in the downpour. It’s BLISS beyond anything she has ever known, a heavy sigh of contentment.

he’s lying on his stomach, kicking his feet and scribbling in his notebook as the old man enters. top hat is perched on his head, as if he had taken the phrase ‘thinking cap’ literally. the slip of the tongue goes entirely unnoticed, already lost to the countless ideas swirling inside the boy’s mind. “hey, DAD! come check out these new ideas i came up with!”

the message had sent a chill down alex's spine when she had read what her dad had sent. it's not that it hasn't happened before, but it hasn't felt like this. the moment she had received the message, she'd picked up the phone to call her dad and it's obvious that he's intentionally being quiet. there's a click of a door in the background before he reveals more of what had happened.
when alex pulls up in drive of the all too familiar house, it's as if she knows she's walking into something different. only she can't place exactly what it is. getting out of the car, she lets herself inside, calling out to let her parents know she's there. wandering down the hall, it's not long before she sees her mom and there's something in alex's chest that flips when she sees the bruising under her left eye.
it's like she blinks and she's engulfed in familiar arms. the arms that have held her more times in her life than she could possibly count. it's only after a few moment, after alex has buried her face in her mom's shoulder that she remembers. pulling back, not too far, just enough to meet her mom's eyes, she's shaking her head as she looks at the woman who had raised her. "what are you doing, mom?" a hand comes up to gently cup her mom's cheek, the opposite one to where the bruising is. just in case. she doesn't want to hurt her. "i'm here to look after you. it's my turn this time."

@incrediblechange for reasons
she has shown him so much, other peoples, other worlds, a whole UNIVERSE. he has seen things he would have never believed. sometimes he isn’t sure if he does. a part of him thinks this is all some fantastical dream which he will wake from at any moment. but it is real. she is REAL. and spirits, is he thankful for it. her companionship has brought a joy to his life he didn’t know possible. his journeys with her give him something to look forward to when his burdens grow heavy. but now, he wants to show her something for once.
“ it’s not much compared to half the things you’ve seen but, ” he gives a small shrug, barely even CONSCIOUS of how his hand is laced with hers. it comes so naturally now. “ i used to come here when i was a boy. ” he has brought her to his favorite spot, a little ways away from the city, though the palace is still visible. a waterfall, frozen by the frigid winter, shaded by a myriad of snow-tipped pine trees and old oaks.
he has let her walk among the streets, see his people, from the mightiest warriors to the simplest merchants. but, a king getting by in his own city, unnoticed is difficult. in truth, he wants to show her something more personal to himself. she has shared so much of herself with him. “ when it’s dark the water GLOWS. ”
