I love when Varyn sneaks a pun by me. I was venting, in a kinda joking way (there’s a term for this, I know there is), in a group chat with some plural friends. Nothing serious, just about how I hate cleaning. Commiserating with Friend System A whose dishwasher broke.

Two members of Friend System B started cheering us.

Them: *pom pom poms*

Varyn got the giggles. Very rapidly he asked me to write back to them pomspompoms, pomspompoms. Or at least that’s what I heard. No, he corrected me as I typed. P. A. L – I caught on.

“V: Palms pom poms,” I wrote. Again, he said/motioned with a nod. I internally gave him a look, unsure. He prodded, so I typed it again. He repeated it slowly as I did, waving his birdboy arms and wings over his head, with the feel of blowing in the wind and the smell of sand and salt.

Then it finally dawned on me what he’d been saying all along (OK maybe like 5 seconds real time, it always feels longer in narrative time), and I added an emoji.

“Palms (🌴) pom poms.” As in he stole them (palmed them) in order to put them on Palm trees.
