The new doctor who radnormals are trying to smear... Tanya Luhrmann.
These posts were written about me posting this PDF of a study:
First, there is a difference between a source and a subject.
The study I linked is about an evangelical church. That church is not the "source" though! They are the subject of the study.
The source is Dr. Tanya Luhrmann, a renowned psychological anthropologist who has studied Christianity, yes... But also paganism, witchcraft and even tulpamancy.
Just to illustrate how utterly stupid the comment is saying the source is an Evangelical church, it's the equivalent of if you had a study into the personality traits of drug addicts, the study is peer reviewed and written by an expert in their field... And then some dumbass dismisses the study because the "source is a bunch of drug addicts."
That's the equivalent to what they're doing here.
This is part of a larger trend of anti-intellectualism from radnormies and sysmeds, with these people who are clearly not educated in any of the subjects they try to talk about making up lies or otherwise trying to smear doctors who actually are educated and have studied these things.
The same people have dismissed Dr Eric Yarbrough for primarily working with LGBTQ people and Dr. Colin Ross who was one of the top experts in dissociative disorders in the world due to some of his opinions that are outside of his area of expertise.
I cannot say that I'm particularly surprised these same exact people would be framing Dr. Tanya Luhmann as a religious bigot.
But it is still pretty wild because, as far as I know, she isn't even religious!
She attended the Vineyard Church to study them just as she joined up with pagan covens for the same reason. When she discusses the spiritual, it's usually framed as an interest in the psychological aspect, and wanting to understand how God and spirits can feel real to people.
Based on what I've heard from her, I don't believe she's Christian or actively part of another faith. I could be wrong on this, but I'm fairly certain she's atheist.
And I still have yet to touch on what is possible you the most offensive part of this, the actual bigotry!
Because while it is absurd to call Dr. Tanya Luhrmann a bigot, the OP who did is an actual bigot.
There are plenty of religions where it is normal to speak to and hear spirits and gods. Just as there are religions that experience non-pathological possession states.
Unlike actual psychosis, these types of experiences are very commonly associated with positive mental health benefits. (Much like tulpamancy in that regard.) These sorts of healthy religious hallucinatory and dissociative experiences are not considered pathological by modern psychiatrists.
While some psychiatrists in the past have pathologized experiences like these, it is generally recognized today that pathologizing healthy religious experiences for being different from what is viewed as the norm in the West was actually extremely harmful and often racist. So we don't do that anymore!
Generally speaking, unless the experiences are associated with worsening mental health conditions, such as being accompanied by distress or disorganized thinking, these are not considered religious psychosis or treated as a mental health issue.
The actual bigotry here is spreading misinformation which tries to pathologize healthy religious hallucinatory and dissociative experiences.
But really, what more can we expect from a hate group???
