Since your first date with Tyler, you had not felt self-conscious around him once. He had this amazing ability to make you feel entirely comfortable with yourself, and as a result, you felt entirely comfortable with him.
Tonight, apparently, was the exception to the rule. Tyler had come over with take out to binge watch the show you two were following together, but the spring storms outside made it unsafe for him to drive back to his place. You had never spent the night together, but you supposed you couldn’t very well send him home in the middle of a tornado warning simply because you were nervous.
As he helped you make a pallet on the basement floor in front of the couch, Tyler talked on and on about the developments in the show you had been watching. You nodded and gave one- or two-word answers, until he finally stopped and pulled you onto the unfinished pallet with him.
“What gives, Y/N/N?”
You shrugged. “Don’t know what you mean.”
“Yes, you do. I’m talking a million miles a minute but your mind is somewhere else.”
Letting out a deep breath, you clasped your hands in your lap and cleared your throat. “It’s just that we’ve never stayed together before, and I’m not worried about what might happen between us or whatever. But there’s a thing that helps me fall asleep that might — well, it’s kind of weird, and I don’t want you to be creeped out. I just expected that our first night staying together would be planned and I could prepare a speech to warn you about it.” You circled your thumbs around each other, hoping he would say something, or maybe the weather would suddenly clear and he could leave.
Instead, Tyler hooked a finger under your chin and brought your eyes to his. “Unless you’re hiding severed heads somewhere and you sleep with one or two on the pillow next to you, there’s nothing you could tell me that would creep me out. I promise. You wanna tell me now, or let me find out?”
“I’ll tell you now,” you mumbled. “But I’m warning you, it’s totally twisted. And kinda dark.”
Tyler laughed, and immediately apologized. “I don’t mean to make fun, it’s just that — well, it took you three months to believe you weren’t damaged goods and that we could actually be good together. It took you a year after I told you I loved you to trust enough that you loved me too, before you told me. Not to mention the occasional phone call to calm you down after a nightmare.” You looked away again, but Tyler again brought your eyes right back to his. “I love you, Y/N, darkness and all. Now c’mon, tell me. I wanna know.”
You drew in a breath until you couldn’t anymore, then exhaled slowly. “Well, you know how I have trouble sleeping sometimes? I’ve gotten in the habit of putting Forensic Files on when I go to bed, and it puts me to sleep.”
“Wow,” Tyler chuckled, “you really are twisted.”
“Shut up!” you exclaimed, playfully pushing his shoulder. “It’s the narrator’s voice and the music and — and —”
Tyler smirked. “And the murder?”
Groaning, you leaned your head into your hand. “I told you it’s dark and twisty.”
“Nah, you’ve just been watching too much Grey’s Anatomy. We’ve all got our weird quirks, babe. Let’s finish this pallet and put your weird murder show on so we can get some sleep before a tornado comes and sweeps us away.”
Warm laughter escaped from your chest; you agreed that sounded like a good plan. Twenty minutes later, the pallet was done and you were both ready to try and get some sleep. With Forensic Files playing on the television, you cuddled up to Tyler and closed your eyes.
He kissed your forehead. “I love you and your twisted mind, Y/N.”
You snuggled closer under his arm, yawning quietly. “I love you more, Ty.”
