There's debate over who Shan Yu (or any other number of spellings of his name) is fictional or not and who's he's based on if so, and he could've been a more recent member of history (ie, between us and them.) There is, after all, five hundred years of history to be had. He could've lived in 2400 within this universe, only 100 years prior. Granted, Romeo and Juliet has survived roughly 425 years or history, maybe Moulin Rouge! can survive 516.
