Hailing from Brownsville, Brooklyn, 21 year-old rapper I.O.D. is steadily rising to the top.
His latest release, the film “ARMEE”, boasts
"what might be bar for bar the most in-your-face and uncut sections of his psyche”
Your new video “ARMME” just premiered on Pigeons and Planes, what was the process of making the video and why was it important to you to create this piece of art?
The video was shot spontaneously. Cypher League contacted me to let me know FolkLore was in town for a little bit and he wanted to shoot artists. It was freezing that night and took a while to get the exact shot we got but it was worth the fever I caught. I always had the idea of making a piece that was simple and would grab the attention of a new listener right away while also drawing attention to the lyrics of the song. It's important for me to keep lyricism alive in the music.
You represent Brownsville, you go by the moniker “Brownsvillain”, how does Brownsville influence your work?
Brownsville has blessed me with invaluable life experiences. I'm so proud of Brownsville and to be from Brownsville. It's a part of Brooklyn that's known as one of the shadiest corners in New York to most but if you really took the chance to speak with the individuals who live here day to day you will see the light in all of them. I just want to be the embodiment of that misunderstood light. The Brownsvillain is in everybody. We all have been misunderstood or outcast to the point we lash out on ourselves and others. The Brownsvillain is also symbol pride for my people. Being labeled as villain from birth because of the tone of your skin. Knowing that two newborn babies of two different hues won't have equal opportunity on this earth. That's something that I hope to change or at the very least spark the mind that will.
NYC is the birthplace of hip-hop, what qualities do you think NYC hip-hop artists lack? What sets you a part from other NYC rappers?
I hope that all NYC hip-hop culture continue to show love and support to those who truly push it forward like they've always done. A mass death of ego is probably what's needed. The power we have when we all put aside our subtle differences or nuances, work together, share each other's music, spend real time with each other, escape the digital, and come together as one is what will bring NYC back to the top of the food chain. I'm set apart by what I say and how I say it. No one in this entire existence can or will ever be able to deliver my message the way it's being delivered by me.
NYC has always been the capital of the cultural world. This summer and fall, we saw many social demonstrations take place (The Millions March, BlackLivesMatter rallies, etc.). What do you think NYC is in need of right now?
What we're in need of is already happening. A complete and total creative renaissance across all field's of art and technology.
What should we look forward to this year from I.O.D?
'm not even sure myself. Who knows what the future brings. More art, that's for sure.
