After years of knowing the soul reaper, Nelliel thinks very little of Hayden’s actions. She knows he tends to get physically, mentally, and emotionally tired. Her little soul reaper friend who's given far more than he’s received. So when he becomes quiet and somber, she knows not to ask questions and just let him be. She’ll ask about it another day, when his steps are a tad lighter and his sighs, less pronounced.
In the meantime, she lets his head rest on her lap. It’s heavy, but not uncomfortable, and as he lay there, eyes closed, muscles relaxed like all the worries of the world have washed away, white-gloved fingers tentatively run through dark locks. She runs her fingers across his scalp, pushing loose strands away from his face, and soothes the wrinkles on his forehead. Her little soul reaper friend, who lets the world walk all over him. “One day, you’ll be okay.”
