Fairport Convention - time will show the wiser - 1968
'this was the original incarnation of Fairport Convention with Ashley Hutchings, Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol, Martin Lamble, Judy Dyble and Iain Matthews.'
It is very funny to me how accurate the drawings on the What We Did On Our Holidays album cover are... like
They nailed it.
Huge thanks to Chiara Aurelia (Peacock's HYSTERIA!) and Fairport Convention's Iain Matthews for their (separate) interviews. These columns already ran online in previous weeks, before running in print in outlets like the Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun, Orlando Sentinel etc.
I've been keeping busy! 😊
The idiom of folk rock encompasses many styles, so we shouldn't be shocked over Fairport Convention being a part of the label. Then again, the latter should be seen as an interesting case, since they provided a British counterpart to an American understanding of the genre. Still, the band's eponymous debut felt closer to their colleagues from the USA, which results in the platter being ignored. True, this remains the LP of a group in search of an identity, but you see they followed the 60's folk rock on their own terms and who knows where they could have gone, had they developed the sound of this lineup. While no one can deny Sandy Denny's later accomplishments within the collective, one wishes Fairport Convention could've found a way to keep Mrs. Judy Dyble.
Fairport Convention - RENO NEVADA - 1968 Bouton Rouge TV clip,
"Part 3 of the 1968 Bouton Rouge French tv show. Featuring the original Fairport Line up of Judy Dyble, Iain Matthews, Simon Nicol, Tyger Hutchings, Richard Thompson, and the late Martin Lamble. Staggering, rarely seen performance, capturing the band in their very early, and now often said best period."
