So. Rooster Teeth made an announcement today saying that they were going to look into the 17+ years of videos and cull some of them as they don’t reflect the image the company aims to present. If you haven’t seen it yet, the actual post can be read here. But as always, I have some thoughts.
Namely: “This review is ongoing; over time we will also edit videos, provide disclaimers where appropriate, and continue to remove content if we so choose.” The wording here bugs me. “If we so choose” in particular. Who is “we?” Is “we” the company as a whole? Upper management? PR? Representatives from Warner Media? Does the community get a say in what gets to stay or go? Who determines whether something is offensive? Why is it offensive? Is it offensive to everybody?
These questions (and more, that people from different perspectives, orientations and experiences than I would think of) lead down a slippery slope. Once you determine “this comment/joke/reference is offensive and the video in question should be removed” does that mean ALL videos that make a similar comment/joke/reference should be taken down, too? If the decisions are being made by a relatively small group of people (Head of Legal & Business Affairs, Senior HR, and an outside Diversity, Equity & Inclusion consultant) how is that reflective or inclusive of the wider Rooster Teeth community? The words “diverse, inclusive and equitable Rooster Teeth” can be a double edged sword because someone will always cry “But I found this funny” or “You’re excluding your old fans!” I’m not saying that all those people making those claims should be acknowledged (because some of those people are just hateful, hurtful and unwanted), but there are legitimate questions in there. There would inevitably be a point where the majority of the Rooster Teeth archive would simply be gone because in some way, some thing would offend some one.
Things that are inherently insensitive or insulting (racial “jokes,” Holocaust jokes, etc but are in no ways limited to those things) are one thing. And an obvious thing that could easily be censored or edited out of a video. What happens to something like the old AH “FAISH!” gaf? Or Gavin or Ryan’s flubs, that people something (but not always) pinned as “Did you just have a stroke?” but could just be passed off as “Gav and Ryan don’t do words good.” Does each get removed or censored? What about the RT Podcast/ATAA where Gavin told the story of sitting at the computer and passing out? The joke was “Yeah, you had a stroke!” The reality was at least Burnie (and possibly Barb and Gus, but I’m not sure) honestly and with care asked him to get checked out because that’s a serious thing. There are so many factors that can be discussed and reasons for something to be kept or removed.
I don’t know. I’m going through a whole work thing where there’s a lack of transparency from higher up, which is probably affecting my whole perspective on things here. Moving forward and trying to present yourself as more inclusive and fair than your past iterations is something to strive for. But if the company decides to thin out the archives, as a fan, I’d just like to know which ones are going, which ones are being edited, why the decision was made and why/who made the final decision. Just having people in upper positions make decisions without consulting the people on the ground doesn’t sit well with me these days.
anyways im going on (semi?)hiatus from this blog
