My humble apologies for thw lack of credits earlier....@Regranned from @iamcaribbeing - The day after Christmas is known as Boxing Day in Great Britain and in countries that formed part of the “British Empire,” including Britain’s former colonies in the Caribbean. The “box” in Boxing Day is thought to refer simply to the Christmas gifts that were given to workers and servants on the day after Christmas. December 26th was also the day when workers were given leave from work to spend time with loved ones they could not see on Christmas Day due to work obligations. Likewise, in the Caribbean, Boxing Day is traditionally spent celebrating with family and friends. In the context of the Caribbean, Boxing Day is a remnant of slavery and colonialism, as on the day after Christmas slaves were given holiday and permitted to visit family and friends. As in the British tradition, they received gifts or “boxes” from slave-owners. In the post-emancipation period, the Boxing Day tradition evolved into bringing gifts to loved ones as compliments of the season. #CaribbeanChristmas, a Holiday collaboration by @iamcaribbeing x @mypeopletellstories 🎥 : @bermudagombeys 🥁: @gombey.evolution | Gombey is a significant cultural tradition with West African influences performed on Boxing Day in Bermuda. . . . . . #beBold #beOriginal #beCaribbeing #caribbeing #iamcaribbeing #mypeopletellstories #Bermuda #Bermudaful #Gombeys #Gombey #BoxingDay #AfroCaribbean #AfricanDiaspora #WestAfrica #GreatBritain #CaribbeanCulture #CaribbeanLife #12DaysofChristmas #HolidaySeason #slavery #colonialism #culture #heritage #traditions #masquerade #mas #olemas #veryblack #island360
