I read an article a couple years ago by a guy with adhd. He said that he has a specific routine in the morning, so he doesn’t forget his lunch (which was common for him.) One day, his wife reminded him not to forget his lunch, which distracted him from his routine, so he forgot his lunch. That’s when I first really understood that I have adhd too. It sucks. My only success has been to try to slow down and force myself to focus on one thing at a time.
So, stay in the kitchen while you wait for the coffee - don’t leave the room. Remind yourself constantly that you have to complete one task before beginning the next. It feels terribly inefficient, and it definitely doesn’t work all the time, but it’s been helping me.
But the good news is from another article I read recently, by a psychologist who says that many folks with adhd are actually primed for hyper focus. We get lost in day-to-day details, but when something catches our attention, we think about it to the exclusion of just about everything else. While it makes for difficult daily living, knowing that can help you appreciate what your strengths are, and how to feel more effective in your life.
Sorry for the endless comments, but your post really hit home for me and I wanted to share my experience. I hope it helps. People don’t know how hard adhd can be.
iamclapclap i love you. I will share any tips and tricks for what I do to try to get better at managing ADHD as I discover them. So far the only thing that has helped me is I’m used to carrying my phone all the time with me everywhere and I have a little “notes” app on my phone that i use to take notes and make reminders for myself so that’s helped out a bit.
Second -- what you said about ADHD feeling like we are in a constant state of hyperfocus...that’s exactly what I feel like. Something catches my attention and i’m fixated on that thing that’s stimulating me and keeping my attention, so I can’t even recognize that long stretches of time is passing. I’m so deep in the rabbit hole I don’t realize what i’m doing and the only way I snap out of it is to get distracted by something else which happens frequently so lol its like im in a constant state of hyperfocused distractions? It’s definitely to the exclusion of all else like you said.
Oh another thing that really helps me is music. Constantly. I listen to music nonstop because the noise and the buzzing kind of keeps my thoughts from sort of spiraling and racing because its like background noise, so its a nice filler in my head in place of constantly thinking and pacing, and it helps me focus better because i’m not lost in my head.
And I agree yeah, ADHD Is definitely hard. I didn’t realize how hard it was until i started trying to put more effort in my life. When most of the time i sort of just walk around in a constant “lost” headspace and don’t really care about the consequences. But it honestly sucks because I can’t function properly and keep a job, or get things done regularly and keep a consistent enough lifestyle to succeed even in small daily tasks and it just sucks tbh :/
I relate though i love you iamclapclap and omg ive missed you so much<3
