Black Tie Formality: Thanks for Sucking the Fun Out of the Event

Recently I was invited to a black tie event for work-related purposes.  I've been to cocktail parties aplenty, but not a black tie event.  As such, I researched the rules of etiquette for black tie affairs to ensure I had all my bases covered. While I knew that a formal evening gown is required, I was completely unprepared for the sheer volume of rules imposed and their restrictiveness. What was I getting myself into? 

While some of the rules pertain to the female dress code for a black tie event, a good portion directs a woman’s behavior at the event. Some of the rules of etiquette for a black tie event are:

Wear a floor length formal evening gown, though in certain circumstances a tea-length gown may be appropriate [but gross].

Carry a clutch purse of silk or satin, bearing detailing to match your gown.

With regard to footwear, evening sandals, pumps and open toe/peep toe shoes are appropriate so long as they are not gaudy in color. Sling-back shoes are not appropriate.

Your jewelry should be of high quality and of gem or stone.

If you own a fur, now is the time to wear it.

Always hold your food and drink in your left hand so that your right hand is free for a handshake.

Avoid gossip.                                     

Avoid “eyebrow raising” topics such as religion, sex and politics.

NEVER exceed your wine intake to a third glass.

I take no issue with the rules governing the dress code. However, am I really supposed to make small talk all night while drinking no more than two glasses of wine? These types of events generally last hours long .... and it was work-related with work-related people!  I needed a few drinks.  And frankly, I find the admonishments to be a bit sexist. I note that I found them only on sites instructing women in the rules of black tie etiquette, whereas the sites for men related solely to the rules for dress. Have the rules not been updated since the days of Mad Men? Do women stand around and idly gossip while men discuss important business and drink hard liquor? 

Certainly monitoring one’s alcohol intake at a formal event and avoiding heated discussions that could quickly turn into arguments are wise ideas. If a person needs a rule of etiquette to instruct him or her in this regard, that person should probably stay home. Thankfully, I managed to conduct myself accordingly. However, by the time Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band rolled on stage at 10:00 p.m., I definitely needed that 3rd glass of wine. 

Seriously?  This is my entertainment?
