His eyes scanned over the monitors briefly, trying to read the alien symbols and numbers. There were a few things that he didn’t exactly understand but it was clear to him that her vitals were stable. Concern washed over his face as her expression soured from the pain. “Easy there, Sum, ” he said as he sat up slightly in the uncomfortable chair. “For someone who took a blow to the chest like that,I gotta admit you’re handing it pretty well.”

Rick’s eyes softened slightly as he looked over his granddaughter with mild coner, a look reserved for few. He wondered for a moment if he should leave her alone, but Rick was too nosy for that. He offered her an apologetic smile, tipping his metal flask towards her, as a fake offering. He took a long sip from the container before screwing the lid back on firmly.
“Don’t tell me you’re crying over some acne ridden boy,” he said raising an eyebrow. “Or something stupid like that.”

He opened the door, stepping out of his handcrafted ship letting out a low whistle at the large skyscrapers. “These aliens aren’t the most friendly, Summer and aren’t good for much, but they can make a drink that’s for sure.”

Rick let out a loud exhale as he plopped down in the uncomfortable chair next to Summer’s bed. He wasn’t exactly a man to wear his heart on his sleeve but he wasn’t completely heartless. He knew that this was ultimately his fault but he wasn’t quite ready to admit to to that quite yet. She was the one who was so adamant to go on an adventure with him, but it was him who had been so careless.
“Are you feeling any better?” he asked her quietly, glancing over at the teenager, his eyes unfocused, but filled with intention.
