just realized I never replied to iamroboteye‘s question about people sorting Steve into Slytherin due to his willingness to bend (or ignore) the rules for a good cause
my answer is that Steve is one of those characters that shows the fundamental flaw in the House sorting system, which is: actual three-dimensional people simply do not have One Defining Characteristic which makes them easy to categorize. And a well-written, three-dimensional character won’t either.
(It’s true that once in a while you do meet a person who can be fit into one of the Hogwarts boxes--I myself am one of them--but we’re outliers and honestly extremely rare. People are just too complex)
I’m not dismissing or insulting the idea of Houses, though, I’m honestly not. They’re super fun to talk about, and it’s really interesting to hear the huge variety of headcanons for Hogwarts!AUs that people come up with.
But the thing that I think it’s important to remember is that your headcanon for a character’s House says a lot more about you than it does about the character. A well-rounded, complex character is going to have a lot of different traits, strengths and weaknesses; which ones you prioritize, and which ones you see as their dominating or defining traits, is very revealing.
Let’s take Steve as the example here. The argument for Slytherin is the afore-mentioned rulebreaking, combined with a willingness to enter into moral greys--or at the very least, to tolerate it in people under his command. The argument for Ravenclaw is that he’s really fucking smart. The dude speaks like 6 languages and is an incredible tactical planner, making him a brilliant leader. The argument for Hufflepuff is his well-established loyalty, and his determination to do what’s right no matter the cost. The argument for Gryffindor is his bravery; he never backs down from a fight, and he’ll take any risk to accomplish his goal.
All of these are the real Steve Rogers. All of these are part of him, and are important facets of his personality. A good character is like a Rorschach blot--everyone sees something different, and what you see in them is a reflection of yourself.
