Where is your favorite place in the world and why?
Oh, tough call. Um…
Well, it’s kind of mood and weather dependent.
I love the zoo, especially on blustery, drizzly days when the wimps stay home. I like to sit with the vampire bats and watch them do their thing. I also like to sit with the gorillas. I like used book stores like Powel’s in Portland or The Tattered Cover in Denver.
Outdoors in the summer, I think I’d have to go with Frank Lake, outside of Fortine, MT (Pop. 29). I lived up there for a time, and we used to take the dog and the canoe and the fishing gear and paddle out to the island. We’d spend all day in the canoe, sitting in silence for hours on end, just fishing. Then we’d build a fire and make some dinner and camp on the island. We spent many weekends up there and never saw another soul, however we did have two sasquatch encounters (true story). It was like it was our own private place. I just remember the smell of the air, and the sound of the wind coming off the high peaks to the north. Clear, FREEZING cold nights (it is northern Montana, after all), but the universe was out in all her glory. In the fall you could hear the elk bugling in the frosty evenings…And we were just two teenage boys and a dog, pondering life.
I still go there in my head sometimes.
Good question, thanks.
