I just saw the pic you posted of barcelona burning, and it remind me a lot of that poc of barcelona from la setmana tragica. This is a prove that history keeps repiting itself. I haven't been able to go to the protests yet, but i will go on fridayand will try tomorrow afternoon, although i did go to the protest that happened in my uni (uab) on monday, but it's not the same. What would you recomend me to do?
Setmana Tràgica, Barcelona 1909.
Setmana de la Sentència, Barcelona 2019.
About your question, first of all no matter what you do or to which protest you end up going, DON'T GO ALONE. Go always with someone you know, and when you are going to and coming back home from the protests remove what identifies you as a protestor. For example if you have an estelada, put it in your bag. This is a safety measure so that if there are groups of neonazis or other idiots looking for trouble around they won't identify you. As long as you're in a group of people you're fine to wear and wave whatever you want though, I'm talking of when it dissolves.
Secondly, there are many demonstrations all around Catalonia and with a very different approach to protesting. Know what you can do and what you are comfortable with doing.
For example there are the Marxes per la Llibertat, where you just have to walk for a long distance to close the highway. It isn't dangerous and there's people of all ages. And it's still useful. If you are relatively new to protesting I definitely recommend this ones (and if you're not I still recommend doing them too even if later you may do something else as well).
On the other side you have the different riots in most cities and some highways. These are more dangerous, for there's a high possibility of the police charging and people are throwing things and setting things on fire.
You can check if an organisation that you follow is organising any action. For example your local CDR, the SEPC student's union, La Forja, or ANC, Òmnium...
And go to protests that are being shared by trustworthy accounts. Don't go to a place just because a random Twitter user says so, make sure an organisation is backing it. Otherwise it could be a trap.
You can find ones in these Telegram accounts: TsunamiDemocràtic, L'Alerta, Assemblea Nacional Catalana, Sindicat d'Estudiants dels Països Catalans, La Forja.
Lastly, KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. In case the police come, run and cover your face. Don't let them take photos of you nor film you, because later they use this to identify protestors.
If you are injured, look for a unit of SEM (Servei d'Emergències Mèdiques). You can ask people around you, people help each other when something happens. The SEM will not judge you nor turn you to the police, so no worry. But if you have to go to a hospital/CAP/urgències, try to not go to the closest one. The police sometimes show up to identify victims.
And now we have to get to the dramatic part.
If you see the police attack or arrest someone: try to keep calm and film everything. Important: even if you send these videos/images to someone, keep them in your phone (or the original device with which you have filmed it). Look for people who may know the person who was hurt and send them the videos/images.
If the police identify you:
They have to tell you why they are identifying you
You do NOT have to tell the police any more information than what is in your DNI
NEVER give them your telephone number, email, etc
Do NOT sign any document
(If you've never been identified before, it will basically just be giving your DNI to the police, they write it down and that's it. Do not worry much, most of the time they just do this to intimidate)
In case you were arrested:
Turn off your phone
The police must inform you clearly and consicely of the reasons why they are arresting you and what you are being charged with.
You have the right to tell 1 person that you have been arrested
They canNOT ask you if you are part of any organisation (CDR, union, etc)
You have the right to be taken to a doctor so the doctor can attest to how you are (if you are injured where, if you are not injured, etc) and this visit to the doctor MUST be WITHOUT the police being present
Refuse to speak without a lawyer. They will try to get you to argue with them so they can get information, don't do it, it's not worth it.
Do NOT sign any document
Do NOT touch anything
Do NOT consent them to take pictures of you. Especially not of tattoos or other things that can identify you.
Do NOT consent to take any DNA proves
Do NOT put on any piece of clothing they give you
If the police beat you:
Look for the policeman's identification number and write it down
If you can, look for descriptive details such as their eye colour, their height, if they are right or left handed, where he wears the watch, etc)
Talk to a lawyer to see if you can sue him
Things to bring:
DNI
Water
Food
Mobile phone with battery
Phone number of lawyers written down somewhere physical, not just your phone. You can use this: 933471714 + extenció 1035: free 24h service for juridical emergencies habilitated by the Assemblea Nacional Catalana
Recommended to have a thick foldier or something similar in your backpack to protect your back if police were to beat you
A bandana or similar to cover your face if the police throw gas or try to film you
Aaand I think those are the main things. If I forgot something important, @ other people feel free to add to this post.
