so i know this guy (a friend of a friend) who doesn't believe in gender fluidity, nonbinary genders, etc because there's no scientific proof or whatever? like he just thinks these people are experiencing gender dysphoria and keeps asking for proof that gender fluidity is a thing, and i'm not sure what to tell his close-minded ass??
The thing is (and this is a huge pet peeve of mine, so Brace Yourself) he has a complete misunderstanding of science.
Science is a process. It’s a way of asking questions about the world and setting out to systematically find the answers.
Science, at it’s core, holds the implicit assumption that the general state of knowledge of the human race is at any given time both inadequate and possibly mistaken. That is, we do not know all the things that it is possible to know (otherwise why would we need science to continue) and some of the things we think we know (even, and perhaps especially, those found out through application of the scientific method) are going to turn out to be, upon further investigation, wrong.
Science furthermore, is descriptive. Because of the aforementioned inadequacy of our knowledge base, science does not ever claim to know everything about the universe and it’s inhabitants. Instead it describes some of the things we sort of think we found out, maybe. Science always explicitly makes room for the possibility that we are wrong. For example, gravity hasn’t been proven to exist—it’s been described to exist according to certain rules, and every time we’ve checked it’s been like that, but it might not be the next time. Science accounts for that. That’s why we replicate studies. That’s why we reformulate theories to suit new data. Science is (or rather, should be—we could talk about the failures of our bigoted science all day) driven by the descriptive data you acquire about the world.
Therefore, it makes NO FUCKING SENSE for people to say “this doesn’t exist because science hasn’t described it yet”. The list of things that science has described is pretty small compared to the number of things that there are. Things don’t stop existing just because science hasn’t studied them yet.
