The Energies – Tell Me The Truth 12” vinyl, 2004
This was the point where Kleptocracy officially became The Energies. New name, new producer, proper studio - and a more polished sound.
The band recorded with Ian Grimble at Rockfield Studios, and you can really hear the jump from the earlier Kleptocracy EPs. The music still has a melodic and genre-defying quality, but everything feels bigger, punchier and more fully formed.
Interesting detail: “Tell Me The Truth” is actually a re-work of “Crunch Munch Tech” from the earlier Kleptocracy CDs - same DNA, but transformed into something much more direct and powerful. Stylistically, it’s a blend of indie rock and synth rock.
Love the minimal design on this 12”: black sleeve, woodgrain centre label, early Energies logo. Very mid-2000s, but still oddly timeless.
Anyone else have this one?
