Rachel Chinouriri released What A Devastating Turn of Events on the 3rd of May 2024, and I discovered her around 2 months ago, and ever since I've been listening and listening to the album. The album has two distinct tones throughout, with more playful but grunge-y songs at the start, and halfway through the tone shifts to be more soft and raw. Accompany that with her incredible lyrical and vocal abilities in every track, and you've got a total masterpiece. I couldn't pick just one song to have as my favourite because of how good they are.
Her sound is one that some may have heard similar things to before, but I think she absolutely stands out as someone to watch in the oncoming months and years because of how infectious her energy and music as a whole is. Every single song on the album is an absolute treat to listen to, and takes you on a journey from start to finish, even things you can't relate to make you feel so intensely.
She has an incredible ability to dive into scenarios, stories, and feelings with her lyrics, and they're all incredible real and deep from the soul. My Blood and I Hate Myself were so vulnerable in terms of content that I really really related to.
I'd totally recommend this album to people who listen to artists like Mitski, Billie Eilish, Madison Beer, girl in red, or generally just any artist who has strong lyrics. Rachel has easily become one of my all time favourite artists with just one album. It's genuinely a treat to be able to listen to her music.
