My new I BIKE NY pin, on my little sister's borrowed jean jacket ;-)
There are gracious people in this city.
Gracious people who sometimes part with valuable things,
and don't expect anything in return.
I'm lucky enough to call writer, author and digital asset management system guru, Siobhan Adcock, my friend -- and the previous owner of my MGX violet-accented mountain bike; which she graciously gave to me gratis!
Such a perfect gift for a new blogging journey. What better way to see and experience a city than above ground -- on its streets, in its parks, climbing up and coasting down its private bike-only bridge pathways. I'm in the club now.
And Jeff at Bicycle Habitat, a bike shop in Park Slope Siobhan recommended, made if official by giving me an official "club" pin.
They even have a website! And, official green bike paths throughout the city; AND EVEN, these adorable little bicycle shaped red and green lights at those really complicated, intimidating intersections.
One day of biking down, and the city is now a playground; a jungle gym; a race course; a speedway; a fitness challenge; and somehow, now, barrier free.
I can go anywhere on this bike!
So, naturally, I decided to go to work. Something that in many locales is a mundane routine, but I beg to differ that getting to work in NYC is a little more, well, interesting...
I started in Crown Heights; meandered my way through the brownstone, tree-lined streets of Brooklyn, all while admiring their Halloween stoop-decorations --
crossed the Manhattan bridge,
made my way over to the East River Trail,
dodged a grouping of Asians in the middle of their Tai Chi morning routine,
passed a group of guys working on a barge [[one in a full-blown scuba suit]]
And, somehow, 9 miles later, made it to work
-- without getting yelled at, once!
Or, let's be honest, harming myself, or anyone else...
An adventure before 9 AM --
And, I'll keep you guessing about how I got home with just two images...
Until next time, I'll be biking...
