RAGUSA IBLA, Sicilia - Dicembre 2017 .

Ragusa Ibla è l’antico centro storico della città di Ragusa. È famosa in tutto il mondo per le oltre cinquanta chiese e i numerosi palazzi. Collocato su una collina, il piccolo borgo di Ibla domina la vallata circostante con le sue casupole e stradine ed è stata inserita fra i siti barocchi Patrimonio UNESCO del Val di Noto, diventata famosa negli anni grazie anche alla serie televisiva “Il Commissario Montalbano”.

RAGUSA - CHIESA DI SAN GIUSEPPE.

Il terremoto del 1693 distrusse a Ragusa quasi tutti gli edifici e tra questi la chiesa di san Tommaso. Durante la ricostruzione della città, accanto al nuovo convento delle Benedettine,  venne costruita, sui resti della chiesa di san Tommaso, una nuova chiesa dedicata a San Giuseppe dove le monache potevano seguire le funzioni religiose senza essere viste. Per questo motivo la chiesa venne realizzata con una forma ovale lasciando, ai livelli superiori gli spazi necessari affinchè le sorelle potessero seguire da dietro le grate le funzioni religiose. Essendo il convento delle Benedettine, uno dei più ricchi di Ragusa, la chiesa venne adornata internamente ed esternamente con quanto la potesse rendere, anche se piccola, bella e preziosa. Di fuori, la facciata venne realizzata nel più puro barocco siciliano, richiamando in parte il duomo di San Giorgio la chiesa più importante di Ragusa, un barocco che alla fine sfociò in un elegante rococò nelle decorazioni del timpano superiore proprio sotto le campane; di dentro la chiesa si arricchì di opere eleganti e ricche come la statua in argento dedicata a San Giuseppe o i cinque altari ricoperti di vetro dipinto a simulare preziosi marmi.

The earthquake of 1693 destroyed almost all the buildings in Ragusa and among them the church of San Tommaso. During the reconstruction of the city, next to the new Benedictine convent, a new church dedicated to St. Joseph was built on the ruins of the church of St. Thomas where the nuns could follow religious services without being seen. For this reason the church was built with an oval shape leaving, at the upper levels, the spaces necessary for the sisters to follow the religious functions from behind the gratings. Being the Benedictine convent, one of the richest in Ragusa, the church was adorned internally and externally with what could make it, although small, beautiful and precious. Outside, the façade was built in the purest Sicilian baroque, recalling in part the cathedral of San Giorgio, the most important church in Ragusa, a baroque that eventually led to an elegant rococo in the decorations of the upper tympanum just below the bells; from inside the church was enriched with elegant and rich works such as the silver statue dedicated to Saint Joseph or the five altars covered with painted glass to simulate precious marbles.
