Why I think Nevin is a Demon

As we all know Nevin Jovel is one of the most mysterious characters in all of IBVS, with his own twin seemingly not to know much about him. So I have now concluded that the reason why Nevin may be as mysterious as he is, is because he is a demon. And here I am to gather hints from the story, and hypothesis why he may have become a demon and under what deal.

Okay, to kick off this “attempting to put all my ideas for IBVS online” rabbit hole, let's start with what I'm assuming is CK’s favorite theory of mine.

Rose Beamer has powers.

Now I don't really have much evidence supporting this yet but what I do have feels like some pretty good foreshadowing.

First, let's start off with the powers, we know they are genetic, potentially some kind of gene that is unlocked by adrenaline or some other fight or flight instinct. This is pretty obvious from the fact that everyone who has powers’ siblings have powers. Nevin and Drew, Edward and Geno, and even Edward and Dez are cousins (stated to be on his father’s side). So if siblings are likely to both get powers, then why don't any adults seem to have them? This could either be from them never being unlocked (like how Drew and Dez gained their powers much later on) or the gene potentially skipping generations.

All of this is to say, that the chances of Rose having powers - or at least the potential for them - is much higher than it may first seem.

The second part of this is something that I've also noticed in Cody (but he is a theory for another day). We know a little too much about her. For a character that's gotten a total of two scenes, we have 1: A character ref, 2: A name, 3: Her job, 4: A pretty good read of her personality, and 5: Her dynamic with Isaac (caring and fun but often busy with work).

I think she has the potential to become a bigger part of the story and would tie in well with bringing attention back to Isaac (our main character).

Speaking of Isaac, this is where the real powers part comes in.

If Rose has powers, then what are they?

Well, we know that Isaac's main power is to bring drawings to life, but he also has a seemingly secondary power of being able to move specifically liquid art supplies at will.

And in IBVS there is one other time a person with liquid-based powers is mentioned, seemingly as a throwaway line

"Drew and Nevin both got to the point and opened up, and even their incredibly catholic grandmother, who could have been a hit or miss when it came to something like this, ended up just nodding and saying ‘oh, I knew a young lady like that about twenty years ago.’

She went into a longwinded story about the girl. About how, in her earlier years of trying to get work in the States, she needed to take an extra job at a daycare, and one of her fellow workers, a woman in her twenties, could create ripples in water like currents with her mind. While Drew was utterly thrilled at hearing this, Nevin was only surprised hearing this from his grandmother of all people.

Grandma Jovel proceeded to give the clarification that Nevin wanted to hear–she didn’t plan to tell anyone about them, due to the danger it could create for them.” (chapter 20 season 1)

Grandma Jovel knew a woman like that twenty years ago. If that lady was in her twenties then, then she would now be in her forties, the perfect age range for someone whose only child is currently 16. And also, the lady had minor water/liquid manipulation powers, a power that could easily be matched with Isaac's stronger-manipulation-but-less-materials-affected.

Grandma Jovel also mentioned that she wouldn't tell anyone, "due to the danger it could create for them," so she understands that people finding out they had powers might put them in danger. This could just be the general "we don't know how people would react" but it could also be that something happened to that lady, say, she goes missing.

This kind of branches out into an entirely new theory (and where I start losing evidence) but, Rose may have been one of the women in the lab. It's specified that the woman who wrote the letters in Ghost Stories worked there; however we don't know if it was as a volunteer or scientist, and she also mentioned how they weren't allowed to leave. We also know that the letter never left the lab. There is a chance that Rose worked there as a psychologist to try to understand how and why she has these powers. If these experiments are what I believe them to be (Mr. Wolfe and Xavier testing the supernatural gene to create Sigma) then it would explain why she would never tell Isaac about her powers or help him figure out if he had any, as she would know that people like Wolfe could come for either of them.

This also goes into another theory about the potential of Isaac's natural powers actually only being the paint manipulation, and the creation part being the other half of Sigma reacting to it. But that's a whole other thing.

TLDR: Rose Beamer may be the lady we hear about from Grandma Jovel in chapter 20

I highly doubt the murder trio will ever be introduced into IBVS, but that doesn’t stop me from creating concepts.

First of all, I think they would work well into the story itself as a group of demons. This not only fits into their original personalities as a bunch of ‘undead’ killers, it also provides a look into the demon world that exists beside the world of IBVS. As of now, the only demon that wasn’t summoned by someone (I may be wrong, it’s been a minute) has been Britney. She’s a special case, however, because she’s been living in the human world with a human parent.

Having a demon or a group of demons not bound by a human’s goals opens a lot of doors. They could become allies, enemies, or could be a group with their own goals and agendas. The only downside to this is that it disrupts the world building Ky seems to have going alright. There are no rouge demons milling about (as far as we know), so there is a possibility that demons can’t come to the human world without a human’s assistance.

But that’s a whole different tangent.

If the murder trio was put into IBVS, they would likely be an antagonistic group with the goal to cause as much chaos as possible. They (mostly Killer) could have a ‘we do what we want’ mentality. Being demons, they could provide an opportunity for character development. They might be too strong for the punch first, ask questions later mentality Edward and Nevin tend to have. It could also give Louis and his family more screen time with their prior knowledge of demons.

Part 2 to this post on my theory that Mr. Wolfe created Sigma: Why I think Sigma is how Drew and Nevin got their powers (or, at least Nevin. the Drew part is really just speculation)

Edit: in hindsight this theory actaully diverts pretty far from that so it's more of just a theory on the whole jovel twins' mother incident(s) thing.

(IBVS Season 2, chapter 4)

Nevin made it clear in s2ch4 that he wasn't born with his superstrength, and that it wasn't directly connected to Drew's powers. How did Nevin get his powers, then? Well, once again I think this is kinda obvious from another line in s2ch4.

The first few times I read this flashback, I didn't think much on it. I thought it was just a snippet of a memory to show how terrible the twins' mother was, and for the most part, that's exactly what it is. But after like ten times of reading this segment of the chapter (i think i have an issue but thats besides the point) my brain started to really focus on the line "and how this is the thing that will make her love him-". This line implies that the mother did something to change Nevin, more than just in a psychological way. I believe this is a flashback to how Nevin got his power, the mother used some kind of ritual (or, according to my other theory, she used Sigma) in order to force a supernatural ability upon Nevin. Especially because it was proceeded by the line "reminding him without words how small he is, how helpless," which implies whatever the mother did was supposed to change this somehow.

To sum up that part of the theory, I think the twins' mother messed with the supernatural in order to give her kids powers, possibly using Sigma to do it, for one reason or another that we don't really know yet. I'm willing to speculate there was some kind of cult thing surrounding supernatural powers and/or Project Sigma, and the mom was part of said cult.

Now, why do I think Drew also got his powers this way? Or, at least that he was part of it to a bigger extent than is self-explanatory? Well, of course there's the fact that Drew has memory issues and headaches related to the fact that he can't remember anything from his mother's house that happened before some kind of accident. Clearly Nevin doesn't want Drew remembering this, which was made clear in Drew's flashback about the house, but it's actually a line from s1ch20 that really feels like it confirmed that the accident had to be related to the supernatural powers.

(IBVS Season 1, chapter 20)

Upon first read, the line "Drew could remember what happened if he wasn't careful" seems to be referring to the incident that broke Drew's leg. However, I'd like to say that this can't be the case. The paragraph mentions "hiding everything" as if that's how Nevin's trying to keep Drew from "remember[ing] what happened" but in context, "hiding everything" includes hiding the fact that Nevin freed Drew's leg by himself. So if whatever he's trying to keep Drew from remembering is the leg incident, then the paragraph would essentially be saying 'Maybe hiding the truth about how he saved Drew was a mistake after all. No, why would he doubt himself? Drew could remember that Nevin saved Drew's leg by himself if he wasn't careful.' That would just be dumb.

Nevin must've meant different "something" that Drew couldn't remember, and the only other one of those that we know of is whatever happened at the mother's house. How would keeping Nevin's powers a secret from Drew stop Drew from remembering that mystery incident? If it had to do with Nevin's powers, of course. And despite it being possible to claim that the incident that gave Nevin his powers is an entirely seperate incident to the one involving Nevin's powers which Drew can't remember, from a storytelling perspective it wouldn't make much sense for the two incidents not to be closely intertwined.

That's pretty much the end of my train of thought. This theory (more like two theories, really) is a lot more sound than the other one, with a lot less wild speculation, but reading the other one will give you more of an idea of what I was going on about with the whole Sigma thing. Brain go brr, I've read chapters 19, 20, 22, 23, s2ch3 and 4 each like twenty times, but that's just a theory a fic theory, end of post.

I was wondering, is there a story to the more demonic Nevin you draw, or is he just a little blorbo?

(Also obligatory I adore your transfem Drew design.)

TBH I'd love to actually make a story centered around Nevin being a demon. I think I might, to sorta practice writing and building up that skill before I actually officially work on any of the bigger projects I'd want too.

Plus I have so many ideas for a demon Nevin. Like I love the idea that Nevin being a demon in something he's absolutely oblivious too, and the only way he actually finds out...is through Felix summoning him.

BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE FUNNY AND HAVE GOOD CONFLICT.

Like so many ideas, definitely wanna draw him more and expand on the ideas.

So he may be more reoccuring and hey, he may have a story to accompany him :)

I’ve seen a lot of theories on how Nevin will be the next school king after Error. If it even is one of the twins, it’s more likely that Drew would be given the title. He’s the one people actually like.

I doubt either of them will be school king though. The twins are sophomores while Ed is a junior. This means by the time Edward graduates, they will both be seniors. I doubt either of them will become school king for a single year. Especially their senior year. There’s enough stuff going on already that year.
